She grew up loving music, especially indigenous Ndebele music. Her Grandmother, Mantombana Mthimunye, taught her to play Ndebele instruments like isikumero, isidonodono and the african drum (iingubhe) and her uncle Besaphi Mthimunye taught her to play a home made oil tin guitar. These lessons were during lunch time while they were ploughing the fields and looking after cattle in the 60โs.
In 1977 she left home and started working in Pretoria where she bought a keyboard and acoustic guitar and started to compose songs. In 1980 she formed a group called Nothembi Nezelamani Zakonomazyanaโ freely translated Nothembi (her traditional name) Nezelamani (the siblings) Zakonomazyana (the clanโs name). During those days they were invited to perform at cultural gatherings, weddings and other traditional ceremonies.

I have no money, I am poor
I prayed, when will it be all right?
There he shouted, unfortunate back
What is life like for some of us?
Yes I am mentally dead
Trouble never ends in my path
Yooh yooh yooh
Yooh hii yooh mama weeh
The sun will set, and my tears will turn into rain
My hard work has been a blessing, things have become easier
Over the years, the chances of success have been missed
I cry out to you my Creator, and you my thong please answer
The cat is sleeping in the fireplace
I am like a bird without wings
All my life I have worked to fulfill my mother's desires
My paths are full of misfortune - bad luck
Even sorrow has become my friend
Hey, why did my grandfather cry?
Aw because I've already told them it doesn't fit
Yes I am mentally dead
Trouble never ends in my path
Yooh yooh yooh
Yooh hii yooh mama weeh
3: Danya (Blaq Diamond)]
Grandma, they cry grandma
Granny, they cried all weekend
Mom, oh even my mom
I can no longer, he still lives in the clinic
Ah boys changed yesterday
Ah for the boys the black house is perfect
Ah boys changed yesterday
Ah for the boys the black house is perfect
Yes I am mentally dead
Trouble never ends in my path
Yooh yooh yooh
Yooh hii yooh mama weeh
I have no money, I am poor
I prayed, when will it be all right?
There he shouted, unfortunate back
What is life like for some of us?
Yes I am mentally dead
Trouble never ends in my path
Yooh yooh yooh
Yooh hii yooh mama weh

As a Zimbabwean who has been living abroad for more than a decade and a half this song was written for me. For us. How long are we going to be economic slaves in our own motherland? This goes out to every Zimbabwean who has had to leave home and endure the worst of the worst in order to make a living and feed many mouths back home as an economic refugee. We have endured the most. Also to my Nigerian, Ghanaian, Congolese, Rwandese etc who have left home in search for greener pastures... Salute
