As far as 'The Dear Hunter', I would recommend listening to these two songs;
1. The Most Cursed of Hands / Who Am I
2. The Fire (Remains)
If you're not interested in the album by this point, I would steer clear, these are the two most powerful medlies in their rotation of later works. I would have to say that Vol V is their strongest work.

Also check out;
Dream the Electric Sleep - Heretics

Another of my favourite bands but 'Heretics' is their sophomore prog-rock release. Strong themes and good instrumentation.

Also 'Rishloo' are worth checking out for their narrative concept work on 'Rishloo - Living as Ghosts With Buildings as Teeth'. a little clumsier than Rush (I compare them to Rush due to the phrasing and singing style, as well as their much earlier Prog-Rock work) with their scripting but the music more than makes up for it. And (unlike Rush), they are true progressive rock throughout their entire discography. Have a listen to the track - 'Dark Charade', truly beautiful track with 3 acts.

There are many more recommendations that I could offer for various reasons but those are at the top of my list as of right now. hope you find something that you like :)

Unfortunately, there's not too much written about 'Garden Window', as it was a sleeper in terms of sales and exposure... however there are tid bits lying around;

ALSO

They mention their tie-ins with Thrices sound, as well as Deftones, which is apt considering their motif.

O'Brother's writing is just very focused, they are concerned with themes, upon which they expand, dissect and hold up to the light -again and again. 'Disillusion' is easily their most focused work, whereas 'Garden Window' tends to meander in pace and the thematic, but still hit home with resounding exclamation due to the cyclic nature of the themes that they suggest and build upon.

Lyrically, nothing is quite like O'Brother... I mean, Thrice does hit the mark with their 'Alchemy Index' series, but that's almost akin to a gimmick, rather than subject matter(s).

Endless Light, while still a great album that I always listen to in whole (I never pick out just one track to play because that's simply not how an O'Bro album works in my world. But when I listen to 'Garden Window', I do admit that there have been times that I skipped to the Title Track (Garden Window) to get that endorphin rush that the song always releases in my head.... and sometimes I'll skip 'Speakeasy' about halfway through, to leave behind the looped narrative at the end. But all in all, O'Brother are special and not many other bands have the same effect on me, as their work does.

If it's the thematics you are wanting to pursue, I'd recommend listening to a whole album from 'Lunatic Soul', specifically 'Walking on a Flashlight Beam', Lunatic Soul are mesmerising in the musical motif sense, they find a specific hook or central idea, and build up on it with shifting progressions and/or melodies... they are the type of band that you need to listen to a whole album, from start to finish.
For more complex structure, go to 'Shaman Elephant', they give me the endorphin rush in their buildups but the works are not as cognitively parallel in their album as a whole, to need to listen to an entire album to understand the concepts... they write smart music, intelligently... all of them masters of their instrument.

However, if you're after someone that will share the mantelpiece with what O'Brother achieve, I'm afraid you're out of luck and will need to look elsewhere as I don't have that answer but would love to know if any one else does?

+Daniel I hope you read your replies cause I'm interested in your opinion.

I've found thrice and the dear hunter to be way too simple for my taste (which seems to be very similar to yours from what you wrote) but I've only listened to a few songs from thrice and the dear hunter's first album - in which I only enjoyed "the pimp and the priest". After trying those two bands I stumbled across Garden Window and fell in love with it immediately.

On to my questions:
1. Do you know of anywhere I can read more about the album? I've been trying to look deeper into it but haven't found the time and it really sounds like it has some sort of lore behind the lyrics.
2.Do you think the lyrics in Endless Light aren't as well written as Garden Window? I noticed a lot of the wording is simple and lacks the impact of lines such as "so Abba father are you sleeping?" which is intimate and creates a clear image in your head.

Also, if you'd like to expand on what you like about O'Brother's writing I would be very interested in reading about it! And thanks for recommending Tanner's solo album, I had never even heard about it so I bet more people will come across your comment and go check it out too.
