“The music we like to put together is dark, but so is the subject matter, so the medium has to be as well,” O’ Brother’s lead singer/guitarist Tanner Merritt spells out the capturing of the Georgia band’s first five written songs.
To break the cimmerian shade of an album based around sleep and its emboss to the natural world a dynamic had to be created, a wall of density given breathe and firm grip around melodies unable to wander. The expected sprawl of soft, then loud, then back to soft was sacrificed projecting a new luminance where the strength was in the tiny twisting light that exhales from the EP as a whole.
The band sought to keep their on stage essence by laying the album down live, forgoing the studio temptation to fill each space. Recorded by Brad Fisher with assistance from Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull the best takes were chosen for keys and effects to be added in later creating the soundscapes tucked beneath each song.
Since the 2009 release the band has shared stages with Thrice, Circa Survive, Manchester Orchestra, Biffy Clyro. Ready to record again the band is in a new dawn; where the sun is rising and a new eclectic output is being embraced.
“I think we are enjoying the writing of our full length more than we did with the EP,” Martens explains the bands next step. “It is more of a shared experience with this one because everyone is writing. The music is coming out better than ever and we are really happy to be coming into our sound.”

Locus
O'Brother Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
And My head expands
muttering words of prophecy
from a fever dream you shared with me
i am right here, where i’ve always been
further up and further in
you always run like a criminal
when you need me
When you need me
love is careless, love is blind
love is envious. I’m envious
always thought it was hard to find
but i’m oblivious. oblivious
In O'Brother's song "Locus," the lyrics depict a state of transition or limbo, referred to as the "in between." The singer awakens in this mysterious place, where their thoughts and perceptions seem to expand. They describe muttering words of prophecy, suggesting a shared vision or revelation experienced during a fever dream. Despite being in this unfamiliar space, the singer reassures themselves and affirms their presence, indicating that they have always been in this state of transition, perhaps hinting at a prolonged struggle or uncertainty in their life.
The lyrics then shift to address someone directly, who has a tendency to run away or distance themselves whenever they are in need of support. The singer describes this person as "tongue tied and elegant," suggesting a certain charm or grace in their communication style. The repetition of the phrase "when you need me" hints at the individual's dependence on the singer, seeking their assistance or presence in difficult times.
The second half of the song explores the complexities of love. The lyrics state that love is careless, blind, and envious. The singer admits to feeling envy themselves and expresses surprise at finding love, as if they were previously unaware or oblivious to its existence. This could imply a personal revelation or realization about the nature of love.
Overall, "Locus" seems to capture a sense of transition, uncertainty, and introspection, exploring themes of support, love, and personal growth.
