Prayer
O.B.C. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen up
Keep me in your head because I'm standing on the edge
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me
Keep me in your thoughts because right now that's all I've got
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer, say a prayer
Because I can cross the line any minute
And I can use divine intervention
Keep me in your mind for a moment of your time
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer, say a prayer
Say a prayer for me

Say a prayer because the devil's there
Think I'm blind but I'm well aware
This fight's been brutal
Never been fucking fair
Complain why
No one ever fucking cared
Alone in the dark
Shivering, fucking scared
These crazy thoughts, mentally exhausting
Night after night
Image of my coffin
Night after night, it's happening too often
Constant fight, now we take precaution
I'm not alright, this is my last option
Thoughts in bed
Holding on by a thread
Now I hope you take what I said and you keep me in your head

Keep me in your head because i'm standing on the edge
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me
Keep me in your thoughts because right now thats all I got
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer, say a prayer
Cause I can cross the line any minute
And I can use divine intervention
Keep me in your mind for a moment of your time
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer, say a prayer
Say a prayer for me

Just need a moment of your time
Just need you to understand what goes on in my fucking mind
This is how I been designed, not how I'm trying to be defined
Trying to break free from these demons, I'm confined
Life's been a lease I ain't want to be resigned
Life's been a beach and I tell her all the time
These crazy fucking thoughts
This crazy fucking mind
Told to give it time, so I smile and I lie
Through all the pain inside
We do this every time
I grab a pen and paper
I write a couple lines
We crawling out of hell
We never look behind
Don't know what's going to happen, just keep me in your mind

Keep me in your head because I'm standing on the edge
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer for me
Keep me in your thoughts because right now that's all I've got
Say a prayer for me
Say a prayer, say a prayer
Cause I can cross the line any minute
And I can use divine intervention
Keep me in your mind for a moment of your time
Say a prayer for me

Say a prayer, say a prayer
Say a prayer for me

Overall Meaning

The song opens with the singer recollecting the moments from their past, many places visited together and promises made. However, it seems like it's all over now and the singer is left feeling the absence of their loved one, realizing that they might never come back. Nevertheless, they've made peace with it and intend to continue without them. The lyrics then shift to how the love story began and how they never expected it to end up this way. The singer reminisces the first time they saw their partner, and it left them yearning for something they never knew they needed. The chorus then follows, where the singer prays for their loved one's well-being and confesses their unconditional love for them. They let them go to find their way back home, but the singer remains hopeful that they will reunite someday. The song ends with a promise that their love will never fade away.

The lyrics of Prayer by O.B.C. reflect on the theme of love and its complexities. It is a story of a person who has lost their loved one but is still holding onto the hope of reuniting with them someday. However, the lyrics hold religious undertones as well, with references made about praying to Allah to bring their loved one back to them. The song has a slow and melancholic melody that adds to the emotions portrayed in the lyrics.

Translation for Ali's prayer, if anyone needs it:

God is great. (said while bending)
Glory to the most magnificent Lord. (said while bent)
God is great. (said while prostrating)
Glory to the highest Lord. (said in prostration)
God is great. (said while rising from prostration)
Praise be to God. (said while kneeling)

Also, for context: Fagir = dawn prayer (before sunrise); Dhuhr = midday prayer

And yes, I do sometimes get stares when I pray in public too.

I've been playing this many times a day since seeing the glorious play last week.

Rough translations for anybody interested:

Jewish prayer: ""May He who makes peace in His heavens make peace upon us and upon all of Israel, Amen."

Hindu prayer: "Lead me from darkness to the light
Lead me from death to immortality
Om peace, peace, peace"

I'm familiar with Allahu Akbar, but can anybody give a translation of the rest of the Muslim prayer?

Heck, I'm an atheist, and I find this beautiful. It's beautiful to see people with so many different faiths combining in prayer, not clashing.

I'm the exact same way. I never enjoyed church, but when I heard Kevin's first words of the hymn, I was swept away with, "oh my god i know this song."

I get you. I'm a lapsed Catholic... But I have always loved the Prayer of St. Francis. I think it's because its message is not so much about worship or divinity, but rather how to be a good, compassionate, selfless human being.

I'm not a religious person at all but hearing all those differents languages together to pray ... it's simply beautiful ❤

It's the most beautiful Broadway moment I've ever seen. If only we could see this in reality more often. How many wars and conflicts could be prevented if we did? How many lives could be spared? Coexistence should be our ultimate goal. To quote Bart Simpson, "The little stupid differences are nothing next to the big stupid similarities!" That is something which we all should live by regardless of our faith and it is highlighted perfectly in this song.

It’s beautiful not because it is religious, but because it’s HUMAN

@Kappa Kiev as a religious person, I'd argue religion is one of the most human things there are

Wiccan here (and I grew up Christian--Episcopalian, specifically). This piece moves me every time. I was 13 when 9/11 happened, and people clinging to their respective faiths is one of the things I remember most about the aftermath of the tragedy, and there was a sense of a sentiment that people often forget: "That no matter by what name we call the divine, all the gods are one, and as long as our faith inspires us to be our best selves and to uplift our communities toward their highest good, it leads to the divine." So mote it be and blessed be.

I'm not religious at all, but the idea of people coming together to comfort each other and find comfort with their beliefs in solidarity....it makes me emotional
