The Force
O.B.I. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We couldn't stay alive
You are now just a ghost
When I turn off all the lights
Would you let go
Now that you're in my head
Do you think that you could leave me alone
Or no?
But can you feel this?

All I want to do is make you feel
But you weren't real
So I want you to disappear, forever

Now that you've closed the door
How could I've ever known
That we could never be anything, ever
Now that you're in my head
Do you think that you could leave me alone

All I want to do is make you feel
But you weren't real
So I want you to disappear, forever

Now that your battle is won
You are gone and I cannot feel you
Take over my mind
The loss, forgotten
You should never let them speak to you again

All I want to do is make you feel
But you weren't real
So I want you to disappear forever

All I want to do is make you disappear

Even though, you weren't really there
You're just a visitor, when I thought this was forever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to O.B.I.'s song "The Force" convey the emotions of a person who is haunted by the memory of someone who is no longer present in their life. The opening lines signify the end of a relationship or a connection that could not be sustained, where the person they once knew is now just a ghostly presence. The mention of turning off all the lights suggests a desire to let go and move on from this lingering presence, asking if they can finally find peace.

The repetition of the phrase "Now that you're in my head, do you think that you could leave me alone?" reflects the struggle of trying to get past the memories and thoughts that still haunt the person's mind. They long for this specter to disappear, emphasizing that this person was not real to begin with, perhaps indicating that the relationship was built on superficial or false grounds.

As the song progresses, the singer expresses a sense of resignation and acceptance that the person they are addressing has closed the door on their relationship. They acknowledge that they could never truly be anything together, and with that realization comes the plea for this haunting presence to leave them alone.

The chorus reveals a desire to make this person feel the pain they have caused, even though they were never real or genuine. The final lines express the singer's awareness that this person was only a visitor in their life, although they had initially believed it would last forever.

Overall, "The Force" captures the conflicting emotions of someone trying to reconcile with the loss of a relationship and the lingering memories of someone who was never genuine. It explores the themes of letting go, moving on, and reclaiming one's own sense of self.

I was five years old sitting next to my mom in the movie theater. After Obi Wan described The Force, my mother , a scientist, leaned in to me and whispered, “That’s God.” When she died six years ago, I had “The Force is with me” tattooed on my wrist.

Can you believe that they only decided to make Anakin and Vader the same person during Empire? In the middle of production, someone just said "you know what would be cool? If Darth Vader WAS Anakin Skywalker." They came up to Lucas with the idea, he loved it, and the rest is history.

@Dirtybuttcasserole You do realize that people hesitate to talk about lots of painful things, right? That's called trauma, and anyone with half a brain can tell you that oh, say, losing your best friend in a brutal war would be something you'd hesitate to talk about. The fact that Guinness has that pause is certainly a credit to Lucas's writing or Guinness' skills - I'll admit I don't know which one, as I haven't got the script in front of me - but lets not pretend it's actual evidence of your opinion.

@Epsilonsama Explain how Darth Vader means "Dark Father" in Dutch, then.
