San Francisco
ORCHESTRA J. DAYS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say let’s close the blinds
But I think I like it when the sun wakes us up in the morning You hurt so deep inside
I wanna be the one you call when you’re stuck and it’s storming

You cried in my arms
I held you fast asleep
I’ll show you love the same ways that you show to me It’s early on the east coast but I feel so free
On my own
(on my own)
(on my own)

And we grow, we grow, we grow, we grow
No matter where we are
We may be lonely but we’re never that alone
I hope you know, you know, you know, you know That I’m not that far
I may be moving but I’ll always be your home

And I feel so safe with you
There’s no expectations about who we should be in the moment And I wanna start anew
Cause deep in my heart, know that you and I will never be broken

I cried in your arms
You held me on the sidewalk
12am in San Francisco, I was heartstruck Now I’m so resilient
I feel better all on my own

(on my own)
(on my own)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of ORCHESTRA J. DAYS' song "San Francisco" explore themes of love, support, independence, and resilience.

In the first paragraph, the singer expresses their preference for leaving the blinds open to let the sun wake them up in the morning, highlighting their fondness for embracing natural light and new beginnings. The line "You hurt so deep inside" suggests that their partner may be going through emotional pain, but the singer wants to be there for them during difficult times. They want to be the person their partner can rely on and call when they are feeling stuck or going through a storm.

The second paragraph depicts a vulnerable moment between the couple, where the partner cries in the singer's arms. The singer assures their partner that they will reciprocate the love and support shown to them. This emphasizes the importance of mutual care and understanding in their relationship. The line "It's early on the east coast but I feel so free / On my own" suggests that although physically separated, the singer still feels a sense of freedom and independence.

The third paragraph highlights the growth and resilience of the couple. It conveys that no matter where they are, they continue to grow and face challenges together. Although they may experience loneliness at times, they want their partner to know that they are never truly alone, as they will always be there for them emotionally. The line "I may be moving but I'll always be your home" signifies that despite physical distances or life changes, their love and support will remain constant.

In the final paragraph, the singer feels secure and at peace with their partner. There are no expectations or pressure on them to fit into societal norms or roles. They desire to start anew, emphasizing the depth of their commitment to their partner. The line "I feel better all on my own" signifies that the singer has developed a sense of independence and self-confidence while being with their partner. They have become resilient and stronger as a result of their connection. The repetition of "on my own" reinforces their newfound sense of self.

Overall, the lyrics convey a message of unwavering love, support, and growth between two individuals. So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words, I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
So close, no matter how far
It couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know
I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words, I don't just say
And nothing else matters
Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters
Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know, yeah, yeah
So close, no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters

@kat12450

I saw this when it 1st aired on VH1 in 99....this particular performance blew me away...somebody mentioned 'chills' in the comments...I had them over my entire body, along with tears rolling from my eyes.

Mind you, I am not fan of heavy metal music by any means --- but I went out and bought the cassette tape for the entire concert (yeah, I'm old, tapes were still out then LOL)

When I bought the tape two months after it aired on VH1, some people in the record store (I told y'all I was old --- we had record stores too back in the day) gave me a funny look....

"You like Metallica???" LOL I'm a black woman, you see.

But that is the power of music...a beautiful song will transcend and touch anyone, no matter who you are.

Glad somebody put this on You Tube, so it can live on, and touch someone else like it touched me 😊
