Origins
O Rappa got their start in 1993, when Jamaican reggae artist Papa Winnie arrived in Brazil for a series of show and needed a back up band to support him. Four people were immediately picked: Nelson Meirelles, a well-known Rio de Janeiro indie producer; Marcelo Lobato, former member of África Gumbe; Alexandre (Xandão) Menezes, a musician with African influences; and Marcelo Yuka, a prolific songwriter and member of KMD-5 at the time. After the shows with Winnie, the foursome decided to keep the band going and added a vocalist and fifth member, Marcelo Falcão, recruited through an ad in Rio’s main newspaper. In 1994, they released their first album, O Rappa, on the Warner label.
Tragedy
In 2001, Marcelo Lobato who was originally on keyboard had to take over drum duties after the band’s original drummer and main songwriter, Marcelo Yuka, was shot multiple times during a robbery near his house in Rio, which severely compromised movement in both his legs and one of his arms. Yuka has been the biggest contributor of the band's social projects for years, even after turning paralytic. He is currently working on other music projects such as F.Ur.T.O.

Saudade foi embora
Vida começa agora
Sigo a multidão, não sou ninguém
Depois que te encontrei,
Alguma coisa me fez tão bem
(Sou feliz, feliz, feliz)
Outros planos, outra cor
E se essa vibe nasceu em nós, (oh vibe)
Melhor deixar crescer
Oh vibe! Oh vibe!
Oh vibe!
Noite chegou
Uma estrela caiu no mar
Boa noite Xangô
Anjo de Iemanjá
Um barco cheio de flor
Alguém para te esperar
Quando você chegar oh flor
Quando você chegar mãe
Quando você chegar oh oh
Alguém para te esperar
Quando o coração bateu veloz
Saudade foi embora
Vida começa agora
Sigo a multidão, não sou ninguém
Depois que te encontrei,
Alguma coisa me fez tão bem
(Sou feliz, sou feliz, feliz)
Passo a perceber ao meu redor
Outros planos, outra cor
E se essa vibe nasceu em nós
Melhor deixar crescer
Oh vibe! Oh vibe!
Noite chegou
Uma estrela caiu no mar
Boa noite Xangô
Anjo de Iemanjá
Um barco cheio de flor
Alguém para te esperar
Quando você chegar oh flor

The song Boa Noite Xangô by O Rappa is a fusion of reggae, rock, and Brazilian rhythms like samba and MPB, and features lyrics that convey a sense of liberation and joy. The song is an ode to Xangô, the African deity of justice, fire, and thunder, and Iemanjá, the mother of the sea and goddess of fertility in the Brazilian Afro-religious tradition of candomblé. The song features a celebratory mood, with the singer expressing joy and gratitude for having found something that made him feel alive again.
The opening lines of the song, "Quando o coração bateu veloz, saudade foi embora. Vida começa agora." (When my heart beat fast, longing went away. Life begins now.), express a sense of relief and release from a previous state of sadness or stagnation. The singer then describes feeling part of a crowd but also feeling like he is nobody, until he finds something that makes him feel alive again. The phrase "depois que te encontrei, alguma coisa me fez tão bem" (after I found you, something made me feel so good) suggests that the singer has found love or some other meaningful connection that has sparked a sense of purpose and happiness within him.
The chorus of the song features the repeated phrase "Oh vibe! Oh vibe!", which can be understood as an exclamation of joy and excitement. The chorus also references Xangô and Iemanjá, with the lines "Boa noite Xangô, anjo de Iemanjá" (Good night Xangô, angel of Iemanjá), suggesting that the singer is paying homage to these deities and invoking their blessings. The image of a boat full of flowers waiting for someone to arrive further emphasizes the sense of anticipation and celebration.
Overall, Boa Noite Xangô is a vibrant and uplifting song that celebrates the power of love and the joy of living in the moment.
