Help!
Oasis/Noel Gallagher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"A one, two, a one, two, three, four"

God help us all
Heavens are to fall
Stay by my side
The sky rips open wide

Don't wait for me
If I'm not here when you return
If there's a God
You'll be crashing when you burn
A still white light
That shines upon the world
Won't lift the cold
Singing out sha la la la la

And I'll go insane
If you don't save my soul
For rich or poor
You don't speak no more

Don't pray for me
If I'm not here when you return
'Cause if there's a God
You'll be crashing when you burn
A still white light
That shines upon the world
Don't lift the cold
Singing out sha la la la la

Don't wait for me
If I'm not here when you return
'Cause if there's a God
You'll be crashing when you burn
A still white light
That shines upon the world
Don't lift the cold
Singing out sha la la la la

God help us all
Heavens are to fall
Stay by my side
The sky rips open wide

Singing out sha la la la la
Singing out sha la la la la
Singing out sha la la la la
Singing out sha la la la la
Singing out sha la la la la

Singing out sha la la la la

Singing out sha la la la la
Singing out sha la la la la

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Help! by Oasis/Noel Gallagher are open to interpretation, but they seem to depict a person who is questioning their faith in God and fearing the end of the world. The opening lyrics seem to express a call for help and a fear of impending doom. As the song progresses, the singer appears to be pleading for salvation, asking for someone to save their soul. However, they do not want anyone to pray for them, indicating a distrust or frustration with organized religion. The song seems to end on a note of uncertainty, with the singer continuing to sing "sha la la la la" as if searching for answers.

The lyrics of this song are typical of Noel Gallagher's style, which often tackled big themes such as love, death, and spirituality. The song was released as a single in 1995 and was also included on the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. It was one of the band's most successful singles, reaching number two on the UK charts.

When I was younger so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone
and I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze

But ev'ry now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me?

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways (and now my life has changed)
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure (I know that I)
I know that I just need you like I've never done before

There is a rare recording of John lennon singing at this tempo, but yes it was decided that the song needed to be more upbeat to help with commercial success

Joe Baron

Rock n Roll = take a sad song(blues) and make it better(celebrate those blues). For No One, Lady Madonna other examples.

MafiaGTA

On 1.75 speed it sounds like The Beatles

Keebine Kobold oh get a grip ffs

George Mclennon

As a huge Beatles fan, of course I like the original better, but I do think this is a brilliant cover nonetheless. I like the fact that Noel played it slowly because you can really appreciate the sadness in John's lyrics compared to the original. Love The Beatles and love Oasis!

grestoable

George Mclennon youre right and John actually wished it had been recorded in a slower tempo for that reason.
