Falling Down
Oasis / Chemical Brothers / Outlaws Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(One, two, three, four)

The summer sun
It blows my mind
It's falling down on all that I've ever known
Time to kiss the world goodbye
Falling down on all that I've ever known
Is all that I've ever known

A dying scream
It makes no sound
Calling out to all that I've ever known
Here am I, lost and found
Calling out to all

We live a dying dream
If you know what I mean
All that I've ever known
It's all that I've ever known

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide
I tried to talk with God to no avail
Calling my name and out of nowhere
I said "If you won't save me, please don't waste my time"

(All that I've ever known)
(It's all that I've ever known)

Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly
I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide
I tried to talk with God to no avail
Calling my name and out of nowhere
I said "If you won't save me, please don't waste my time"

The summer sun
It blows my mind
It's falling down on all that I've ever known
Time to kiss the world goodbye

Falling down on all that I've ever known
Is all that I've ever known

Overall Meaning

The song "Falling Down" by Oasis and The Chemical Brothers is a melancholic reflection on the disillusionment of life. The opening lines of the song, "The summer sun, it blows my mind. It's falling down on all that I've ever known," suggests a sense of displacement and confusion. The chorus, "Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly. I cried the rain that fills the ocean wide. I tried to talk with God to no avail. Calling my name and out of nowhere, I said 'If you won't save me, please don't waste my time,'" further underscores the theme of feeling lost and defeated by the world. The repeated phrase, "All that I've ever known, it's all that I've ever known," emphasizes how unchanging and unfulfilling life has been.

The use of nature imagery throughout the song amplifies the sense of despair. The references to the sun and rain create a contrast between light and dark, with the sun blowing the singer's mind and the rain creating an ocean of tears. The metaphor of the butterfly being broken by the wheel highlights the fragility of life and how easily it can be destroyed. The lines "I tried to talk with God to no avail. Calling my name and out of nowhere," suggest a spiritual crisis and the singer's sense of isolation.

Overall, "Falling Down" is a moving and poignant reflection on the futility of life and the search for meaning and purpose amidst the chaos.

Chose life.
Choose alcoholism.
Choose failed relationships.
Choose lost money
Choose time in the county jail
Choose self destruction
Choose living up to everything that dad never wanted you to be.

Then...

Choose a newfound sense of dignity.
Choose when to drink
Choose your friends
Choose when to tell your past to fuck itself.

Choose when to embrace the sun.
Choose when to live your life on YOUR terms
Choose when to embrace yourself
Choose when to look at a mirror with hope.
Choose when to smile, and learn, and love.

Choose when to let the ghosts of your childhood stay ghosts.

Choose that it's okay to be your-fucking-self.

It's okay to smile and laugh once in awhile.

@@trickydick2909 You've never taken anything except alcohol and caffeine, right?

The film's message is not about drugs, it's about money and modern society. It's a critique to these two to be exact...

And this is promptly communicated by the opening and closing sequences of the "Choose Life" speech. It clearly explains how our shallow and whining minds try to entertain themselves with useless products, luxury and comfort, without ever finding the necessary satisfaction to lead a happy and fulfilled life. An ex drug addict, or just drug user/experimenter, is aware of this flaw, and doesn't indulge in such behaviour. Reasons? Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?

Drug addiction is more common than you can imagine. We are all addicted to our work, or hobby, videogames, sex, music, lies, food and so on. It's a primal behaviour explained by philosophers thousands of years ago. It's called gluttony, and it's not just about food.

When Renton finally steals the money, he is aware of the power and freedom that it guarantees. He decides to stop using heroin in a bat of an eye and keeps on smiling, walking and explaining what he's about to embark in.

The film both glamorizes and demonizes heroin. Looking at select scenes of the film, you will become curious or disgusted by the effects it has on your psyche and social life. But the final and integral meaning of the film has nothing to do with heroin and drugs :)
