Go To Sea
Ocean Colour Scene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're Twenty-One and North of the border the chance is
The Military Man will come and offer a hand and advances

Go to sea boy
Go to sea boy, go to sea

With the shipyards sunk on the Clyde
And the sea the junk life is dangerous
With a pocket of woes in this perishing hole it's so obvious

Go to sea boy, go to sea boy
Go to sea boy, go to sea

Then you'll sail away and we'll teach you a trade
That's for life
It's only killing but there's nobody willing
So we're asking on the Clyde

When you're Twenty-One and North of the border the chance is
You'll sail away to a life in the dirt then advances

Overall Meaning

The song “Go To Sea” by Ocean Colour Scene is a melancholic representation of the bleak prospects for young men living in the Scottish working-class community during the 1980s. The song reflects on the declining industrial world of Britain, where there was a lack of opportunities for young men to seek a career, leading them to join the military force. The lyrics, “When you're Twenty-One and North of the border the chance is, The Military Man will come and offer a hand and advances,” talk about how joining the military seemed to be the only option for Northern Scottish men at the time to escape their current circumstances.

The mention of “shipyards sunk on the Clyde” reflects the decline of the shipbuilding industry in Scotland. With the lack of job opportunities, many Scottish men were left with “pocket of woes in this perishing hole” as they struggled financially to make ends meet. Despite the harsh realities, the song encourages the young men to go to sea, to join the military and learn a trade that they could use for the rest of their lives.

The lyrics display the pain and struggles of the Scottish working-class youth during the 1980s, giving the audience a glimpse into a world far removed from the glitz and glamour of urban life. The song conveys the idea that in this world, men were forced to make difficult choices, with the only option available to them being to serve in the military for some security.

What an epic song. So many boys in Scotland end up going to sea with the Navy and taking part in wars simply because they don’t have any other employment prospects. At least they got a tribute song from OCS tho, silver linings 😅
