Biography
A daughter of Italian immigrants living in São Paulo, Odete suffered a tragedy in her childhood when both of her parents committed suicide.
Later on, considered a blond bombshell with green eyes, she was able to start her career, first as a model, taking part of the first fashion show in Brazil.
She then started a television career at TV Excelsior and TV Tupi. First as an ad girl, until she received her first role as an actress.
She took part in almost 40 movies and also sang, sharing a stage with main Brazilian musicians and composers as Vinícius de Moraes, Chico Buarque and MPB-4. Later in her career she famously refused the invitation to start as “Odete Roitman” on the legendary soap opera “Vale Tudo”, one of the most iconic roles in the history of soaps in Brazil.
At the peak of her career, she converted to Buddhism and left her career to live isolated in the Região Serrana (mountain region) of Rio.
Odete Lara was married to playwright Oduvaldo Vianna Filho, author Euclydes Marinho and director Antonio Carlos Fontoura, but had no children. Her last work on television was in TV Globo soap opera “Pátria Minha”, in 1994.
Music Career
She ventured into a music career when she worked with Vinícius de Moraes a seminal figure in contemporary Brazilian MPB music, singing on the album vinicius de moraes, first released in 1963. As a poet, Vinícius wrote lyrics for a great number of songs that became all-time Brazilian classics and was also a composer, a playwright, a diplomat and, also an interpreter of his own songs.In 1966 the duo also released another album named “Coleção de Poesia Falada Vol. 5” with Vinícius’ poetry.
In the same year Odete released the solo samba / Bossa Nova album “Contrastes” and the Bossa Nova style single “Funeral De Lavrador / Sabe Você”. She also took part in another single with Chico Buarque and MPB-4 named “Noite dos Mascarados“ as well a solo single album sung in Spanish “ El Funeral Del Labrador”.
