Disorder
Ofln - Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
Lose sensations, spare the insults, leave them for another day
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Take the shock away

It's getting faster, moving faster now
It's getting out of hand
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs
It's a no man's land
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing
Getting frequent now
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling
Let it out somehow

What means to you, what means to me
And we will meet again
I'm watching you, I'm watching
Oh I'll take no pity from your friends
Who is right? Who can tell?
And who gives a damn right now?
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold
Then you know

I've got the spirit
But lose the feeling
I've got the spirit

But lose the feeling
Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Disorder" by Joy Division can be interpreted as a reflection of the singer's struggle with feeling disconnected and numb in a world that seems overwhelming and chaotic.

In the first verse, the singer expresses a longing for someone who can guide them and show them what it's like to experience the pleasures and emotions of a normal person. They are tired of feeling detached and want to break free from their current state. They are willing to let go of negative sensations and insults, and are determined to find a way to overcome their numbness.

As the song progresses, the singer describes the increasing intensity and chaos of their surroundings. They feel as if things are spiraling out of control and becoming overwhelming. The tenth floor and back stairs symbolize a place of isolation and emptiness, a no man's land where they feel lost. The flashing lights and crashing cars represent the chaotic nature of the world.

The chorus reflects a sense of uncertainty and confusion. The singer questions the meaning and significance of their experiences and wonders who is right or who can truly understand. They express a lack of concern for the opinions and pity of others, suggesting a desire to find their own path.

The repetition of "I've got the spirit, but lose the feeling" at the end of the song emphasizes the internal struggle the singer faces. They have the motivation and determination to change their state of numbness, but they still struggle to truly feel and connect with their emotions.

Overall, "Disorder" portrays a longing for connection and a battle with inner detachment. It reflects the chaos and uncertainty of the world and the struggle to find meaning and a sense of self amidst it all.

Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
These sensations barely interest me for another day,
I've got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away.

It's getting faster, moving faster now, it's getting out of hand,
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs, it's a no man's land,
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, getting frequent now,

What means to you, what means to me, and we will meet again,
I'm watching you, I'm watching her, I'll take no pity from your friends,
Who is right, who can tell, and who gives a damn right now,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,

"The wrong generation" doesn't exist. Music is timeless.

@IncredulousMisanthrope

@Doug Mooney no he didn't. Every generation has things that other generations may lack. Even these days we have bands that may be just as good as those from the 80s....take "Molchat Doma" for example...

@raiderpdog

Yep, the music is out there waiting; for the right, open minds to find it. Doesn't matter if the song is 300 years old or 3 months old, timeless music has a way of having the right person find it, sometimes right when they needed it in their life. And then they can't believe how they lived without it.
