Down Home Girl
Old Crow Medicine Show Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I swear your perfume babe is made out of turnip greens
Every time I kiss you girl it tastes like pork and beans
Even though you're wearing those uptown high heels
I can tell from your giant step you've been walking through the cotton fields

Ohhhhh you're sooooo down home girl

Every time you monkey child takes my breath away
Well every time you move like that girl I got to get down and pray
Girl you know that dress you're wearing is made out of fiber glass
Every time you move like that girl I got to go to Sunday Mass

Ohhhhh you're sooooo down home girl

I'm gonna to take you to the muddy river and push you in
So I can watch the water roll on down your velvet skin
I'm gonna take you down to New Orleans down in Dixie land
So I can watch you do the second line with an umbrella in your hand

Ohhhhh you're sooooo down home girl

Overall Meaning

The song "Down Home Girl" by Old Crow Medicine Show is a playful and catchy tune that celebrates the beauty and charm of a woman who is not afraid to show her roots. The first verse describes how the woman's perfume seems to be made out of turnip greens, and how every kiss tastes like pork and beans. Despite wearing uptown high heels, the singer can tell from her giant step that she has been walking through the cotton fields. The chorus repeats the phrase "you're so down home girl" to emphasize the singer's attraction and admiration for this woman.

The second verse describes how the woman's movements take the singer's breath away and make him want to pray. Her dress is made out of fiberglass, but still has the power to make him want to go to Sunday Mass. The bridge takes a more humorous turn, as the singer jokes that he wants to push the woman into a muddy river so he can watch the water roll down her velvet skin. He also wants to take her down to New Orleans so he can watch her do the second line dance with an umbrella in her hand. Overall, the song celebrates the unique and authentic nature of this woman, and the singer's desire to be close to her.

I saw them last Saturday even though it was in the south; but I'm a hard core rocker and their show blew every metal, rock, blues, etc. show away. They filled up 7 city blocks with people watching the show. People for as far as you could see. It had to be one of the best shows I have ever seen, and I have seen a many rock shows, and they held their own that day.

@Nargle19.

That is Amazing. Amen. I said that one fellow could give Slim.Shady a run for his money on spitting beats. Man is Fast.

I am a classically trained professional musician and I love this group. What gets played on radio waves these days are just so nauseatingly over-produced/glossied up. But music and musicians like this group still gives me some hope... and that elderly gentleman's comment was just priceless!!!

@andrew12bravo21

Carl Kraft That it would. I met them about 8 years ago after a concert, I'll never forget about it.

@crocks2871

I saw them way back in 2001 on the street in Bristol,Tn they were young and wild but man could they play even back then. They had a real live old timey string band sound to it back then. I remember a few years later seeing wagon wheel music video on TNN and I instantly recognized them and knew they were gonna be recognized worldwide eventually
