Old Man Luedecke left the big old city of Toronto, met a girl in the Yukon, fell in love, bought a banjo and fell in love again. After a couple of years of love and banjo and the makings of a brilliant performing career in sunny Halifax, he returned to the Yukon with his sweethearts. There he woodshedded. He wrote a ton of songs over the next year and a half. He held regular gigs playing banjo in a gambling hall with can-can girls and in a honky tonk called the Snakepit accompanying piano barnacle Bob. Even made an appearance at the Dawson City Music Festival. After a time, he left again for Halifax to renew musical acquaintances and record his debut CD Mole in the Ground. That CD has become a smash on college radio, was featured on CBC's Atlantic Airwaves and is a hot item in stores and at shows. He continues to live in Halifax and perform there and around the country to ever-wider acclaims. His stage show blends hokum and inspiration into powerful and fun entertainment that will delight young and old. He's still sweet on the girl he met up there in Yukon, and the banjo

This May Hurt A Bit
Old Man Luedecke Lyrics

That I'd been gone a long time
Just wondering if you noticed
That I come back today
Think I finally found something
That I can really hold on to
I might suffer when I'm near you
But I can't bear being away
Well we started something
That burned a lot hotter than a brush fire
You tried to throw the brake
But the train had run away
Got lost in the woods without a trail of breadcrumbs
We tried just friends
But our hands got in the way
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
So I spent a season out there in the wilderness
Just to try and cool down and try and understand
How something so right could hurt and burn like fever
I'm lost without you and I yield to your demands
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
Saw a red moon rising
Up the first base line at the ball park
And a foul ball became a grand slam
Well a man and a woman
We are two planets aligning
I can't be happy 'til you wear your wedding band
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
This may hurt a bit
But this is love it's it
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
It's love love love (oh it's love)
It's love love love (oh it's love)
It's the coming of the light
Breaking through the night
It's love
The lyrics of Old Man Luedecke's song "This May Hurt A Bit" delve into the complexity of love, longing, and the pain that often accompanies deep emotions. In the opening verses, the singer expresses a sense of yearning and questioning whether their absence was noticed, highlighting the emotional vulnerability and desire for connection. They acknowledge the difficulty of being near the person they love, yet the unbearable feeling of being apart from them suggests a strong emotional attachment that cannot be easily shaken.
The next verses describe a passionate yet tumultuous relationship that started intensely and spiraled out of control like a runaway train. Despite attempts to dial back and remain just friends, the physical attraction between them proved too strong to resist. The imagery of getting lost in the woods without a trail of breadcrumbs conveys a sense of confusion and being unable to find a way back to a simpler or less intense dynamic.
As the song progresses, the singer reflects on their time spent trying to make sense of the intensity of their feelings and the pain that comes with loving someone deeply. The metaphor of feeling like they are in the wilderness trying to cool down symbolizes a period of introspection and self-discovery. The acknowledgment that something so right can also cause hurt and burn like a fever showcases the dual nature of love and its ability to both uplift and challenge us.
The final verses bring a sense of resolution and commitment to the relationship, symbolized by the image of two planets aligning and the desire for a deeper connection through marriage. The references to a red moon rising and a foul ball turning into a grand slam evoke feelings of hope, transformation, and the power of love to overcome obstacles. The repetition of "This may hurt a bit, but this is love" emphasizes the idea that love is not always easy or pain-free, but it is ultimately worth the struggles and sacrifices for the deep connection it brings. The refrain of "It's love love love" reinforces the central theme of the song, celebrating the transformative and illuminating nature of love breaking through the darkness.
