In 2007, she signed with music publisher pigFACTORY and worked with producer Josh Crocker to polish her songs into her debut album, Eyes Wide Open, which arrived later that year. Her music appeared on TV shows such as The Hills and The Real World, and the video for her song "Indescribable" was featured on the 2009 Grammys. Around that time, Broadfield got a record deal in the States when Vagrant Records signed her; she became the punk-dominated label's first female artist. The imprint reissued a remixed and remastered version of Eyes Wide Open in summer 2009.
Eyes Wide Open
Olivia Broadfield Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
As the moon is rising
Stay where you are
As I close the curtains
Nothing is for certain
So stay where you are
(And leave them both tight)
I can't help but think
(This might be the last time)\\
Daylight's approaching
And my mind is coasting
Out of control
These days without you
Make me start to cloud you
Out of control
\\Keep your eyes wide open
(And leave them both tight)
I can't help but think
(This might be the last time)\\
(Out of control)
(Out of control)
Keep your eyes wide open
(And leave them both tight)
I can't help but think
(This might be the last time)
The first verse sets the stage for the song's theme of uncertainty and the fear of the unknown. The singer acknowledges the beauty of the night, with the stars shining and the moon rising, but then immediately adds a tone of caution, urging the listener to "stay where you are." The singer then closes the curtains, creating a sense of enclosure and separation from the outside world. The use of the phrase "nothing is for certain" emphasizes the theme of uncertainty and the idea that anything could happen in the future. The listener is left with a sense of foreboding and unease.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "keep your eyes wide open" twice, suggesting that the singer is urging the listener to be alert and aware of their surroundings. The instruction to "leave them both tight" adds a sense of tension and vigilance. The next line, "I can't help but think," implies that the singer's own fears and anxieties are driving this need for vigilance. The lyric "this might be the last time" amplifies the sense of urgency and importance – the singer seems to be suggesting that there is something at stake, something worth protecting.
The second verse continues the theme of uncertainty and anxiety, with the singer's mind "coasting out of control" and thoughts of the absent loved one clouding their mind. The sense of being "out of control" is emphasized with repetition, and the lack of control is extended to the daylight itself. The chorus is repeated twice more, bringing the song to a close with its persistent sense of unease and anxiety.
