Overcome
Ollie Wride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't hide from the action
But I can't brace your fall
When arrows fly over my head
I'm counting down, got to break out

Whatever happened to the two of us?
We were free from distraction and doubt
I wanna be frozen, just wanna be frozen with you
On your side again

So tell me it's alright and you're gonna be there
Keep me from shadow, when dark fills my head
My fortune ain't fading you can see in my eyes
I will overcome, I can overcome

To the light in the distance
You're my only desire
Like the sun gives into the night
I won't slow down, I'm homeward bound

Whatever happened to the two of us?
We were free from distraction and doubt
I wanna be frozen, just wanna be frozen with you
On your side again

So tell me it's alright and you're gonna be there
Keep me from shadow, when dark fills my head

My fortune ain't fading you can see in my eyes
I will overcome, I can overcome

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ollie Wride's song Overcome are about a person facing challenges but with a desire to overcome them with the support of their loved one. The first verse talks about how the singer is not one to shy away from challenges, but sometimes it is not possible for them to protect their loved one from it. However, they still want to be there for them and break out of any kind of situation they might be in. The lines "Whatever happened to the two of us? We were free from distraction and doubt" could be interpreted as the singer reminiscing about a time when they were both free and happy without any obstacles or doubts in their relationship.

The second verse mentions how the singer wants to be frozen with their loved one, possibly as a way to express a desire to stop time and cherish their moment together. The chorus is a plea to their loved one to assure and support them in times of difficulty. The lyrics "My fortune ain't fading you can see in my eyes, I will overcome, I can overcome" represent the singer's confidence in themselves and their ability to conquer any obstacles that come their way.

The overall theme of the song is about having a strong bond with someone and overcoming challenges with their support. The lyrics are emotive, and the use of metaphors, such as the sun and the night, and the idea of being frozen adds depth to the meaning of the song. The song's universal message is relatable as it represents the importance of loving and supporting one another through difficult times.

You have to expect a different sound here than Ollie's work with FM, otherwise it would just be another FM track. While I'm huge fan of both sounds (Would love an FM x Ollie album!), I definitely love the direction he's going with his solo work. It's actually quite a nice change of pace when you've been inundated by synths and repetitive 4/4 bass lines. Overcome has its roots in 80's pop, R&B, and rock with nods to pioneers like Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and Michael Jackson. No matter who is behind the production (Michael Oakley in this case!), Ollie's vocals and song writing talents are timeless treasures that shine and I'm truly looking forward to the album!
