Madness
One Step Beyond Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Madness, madness, they call it madness
It is plain to see, that is what they mean to me
Madness, madness I call it gladness
Madness, madness, they call it madness
Madness, madness, they call it madness
I'm about to explain, that someone is using his brain
Propaganda ministers
Propaganda ministers
I've got a aim in view
I'm gonna walk all over you
'Cause madness, madness I call it gladness
But if this is madness
Man, I know I'm filled with gladness
It's gonna be rougher, it's gonna be tougher
And I won't be the one who's gonna suffer
Oh, no, I won't be the one who's gonna suffer
You are gonna be the one?
The song "Madness" by One Step Beyond is a delightfully upbeat and catchy tune that explores the concept of madness - or perhaps more accurately, people's perceptions of madness. The repetition of the phrase "Madness, madness, they call it madness" sets the tone for the song, as lead singer Suggs gleefully proclaims that what others might see as madness is actually gladness to him. In fact, he seems to revel in the idea of being a little bit crazy, insisting that he's the one filled with gladness even as he acknowledges that others might suffer for it.
The second verse takes a slightly darker turn, with Suggs referencing "propaganda ministers" and declaring that he's "got an aim in view" - though it's not entirely clear what that aim might be. The bridge is a bit of a non sequitur, with Suggs insisting that things are going to be "rougher" and "tougher," but that he won't be the one who suffers. It's a bit of a confusing moment, but it adds to the overall sense of jollity and whimsy that permeates the entire song.
Taken as a whole, "Madness" is a celebration of individuality and not being afraid to have a little fun, even if it means others might look at you like you're a bit mad. The song's upbeat ska-influenced sound and Suggs' infectious delivery make it an instantly recognisable classic, and it's not hard to see why it's endured as a beloved tune for so many years.
