Everything I Am
One True Thing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wish I was everything you need.
Wish I was everything you've seen before and more.
Wish I was everything I am, plus a little piece of man,
so I'd understand you.

If you don't want me, let me know.
I'm dying of trying to be there!
If you don't need me, let me go.
I'm lost and I'm trying to find me!

Wish I was everything you need.
Wish I was everything you've seen before and more.
Wish I was everybody's girl,
and dreamed that I could rule the world.
But no one would listen, just listen now!

If you don't want me, let me know.
I'm dying of trying to be strong.
If you don't need me, let me go.
I'm lost and I'm trying to find me!

We don't argue anymore and I don't miss you.
â??Cause you never really cared about me anyway.
And we don't argue any more and I don't need you.
After all, you are the reason I ran away.

If you don't want me, let me know.
I'm dying of trying to

And we don't argue anymore and I don't miss you.
â??Cause you never really cared about me anyway.

And we don't argue anymore and I don't need you,
â??cause after all, you are the reason I ran away.

Overall Meaning

The song "Everything I Am" by One True Thing is a heartfelt ballad that expresses the desire to be everything that somebody needs. The lyrics are emotional and vulnerable, and they convey a sense of longing and desperation for acceptance and validation. The singer wishes that they could be everything that the person they love wants and needs, but they also acknowledge that they are flawed, which is why they wish they could understand the other person better.

The song is about the frustration of trying to make a relationship work when one person is not fully committed, and it explores the pain of unrequited love. It speaks to the universal experience of feeling like you're not enough for someone, and the fear of losing that person because of who you are. The chorus is a plea for honesty and clarity: "If you don't want me, let me know. I'm dying of trying to be there! If you don't need me, let me go. I'm lost and I'm trying to find me!"

The lyrics also touch on themes of empowerment and self-discovery. The singer dreams of being "everybody's girl" and ruling the world, but realizes that true happiness comes from within, and that nobody else can define who they are. The song ends on a note of resolution, with the singer declaring that they don't miss the other person anymore because they never cared about them in the first place. It's a bittersweet ending that acknowledges the pain of letting go, but also celebrates the freedom that comes from finding yourself.

The album "Finally" actually has two versions! The one from 2002 has this song on it as track nr 5. In 2004, they released the album again, without this song, and with the song 'monster' instead as track nr 1. (4:19). Both songs are completely different. You could check the musicbrainz website, that's where I found the info.

You had to write the band and request a CD when it came out. They mailed it to you from their home in NJ. It was on a private label. Came with a disc in cardboard sleeve.
