Closure
Opeth (Sverige) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Heal myself, a feather on my heart
Look inside, there never was a start
Peel myself, dispose of severed skin
All subsides, around me and within

There's nothing painful in this
There's no upheaval
Redemption for my pathos
All sins undone

Awaiting word on what's to come
In helpless prayers a hope lives on

As I've come clean I've forgotten what I promised
In the rays of the sun I am longing for the darkness

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Opeth's "Closure" are incredibly introspective, exploring themes of self-improvement and the process of letting go of past hurts and mistakes. The opening lines, "Heal myself, a feather on my heart/Look inside, there never was a start" can be interpreted as a call to self-care, to take care of oneself and to do inner work to find peace.

The second stanza, "Peel myself, dispose of severed skin/All subsides, around me and within" speaks to the process of shedding old skin, of letting go of one's past self in order to move forward with renewed purpose. These lines could be seen as a metaphor for the shedding of old habits or even a representation of a literal shedding of skin.

The following stanza, "There's nothing painful in this/There's no upheaval/Redemption for my pathos/All sins undone" suggests that this self-improvement is not an easy process but that it is ultimately worth it. The final verse, "In the rays of the sun I am longing for the darkness" may point to the fact that even as one strives to improve oneself, there might still be a longing for the familiar darkness of the past. It is important, however, to stay focused on the goal of self-improvement, even when it is difficult.

The middle eastern outro gets me every time. Absolutely perfect track and album. One of Opeth's best for certain.

Martin Lopez lived many years in Uruguay and admited to be inspired by Candombe, a drumming-based musical style originally played by african slaves, very popular in said country. Source: I'm Uruguayan :p
