Look Up
Oppenheimer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We turned a corner on an open road
Another metaphor to help you share the weight of this load
A certain person is the filler boy
And now it's curtains to the trip that you enjoy, you enjoyed

I know some people in the city
Never look up at the spaces in the buildings
That they walk past everyday
And they say,
I swear some people in the city
Always look up at the spaces in the buildings
And the years this city describe
The emptyness that you're feeling in your lives

Always a point that you'll be truly sore
I held it back, held it back, too long, too long to ignore

I know some people in the city
Never look up at the spaces in the buildings
That they walk past everyday
And they say,
I swear some people in the city
Always look up at the spaces in the buildings

And the years this city describe
The emptyness that you're feeling in your lives

Overall Meaning

The song "Look Up" by Oppenheimer uses metaphors to talk about the human experience of feeling lost or unfulfilled in life. The first verse describes turning a corner on an open road, which can be seen as a symbol for a new direction in life. The metaphor of a "filler boy" suggests that someone or something has been filling a void in their life, but now it's time to face reality and move on. The line "it's curtains to the trip that you enjoy, you enjoyed" suggests that the enjoyable journey has come to an end and it's time to face the reality of the situation.

The chorus talks about how people in the city can either look up at the spaces in buildings or not. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for people either being aware of their surroundings and seeking meaning in life or just going through the motions without questioning anything. The line "and the years this city describe the emptiness that you're feeling in your lives" suggests that our environment reflects our internal state and that people may feel empty or unfulfilled when they are not living intentionally.

The second verse emphasizes the importance of taking action and not ignoring the point of true soreness. This can be seen as a metaphor for dealing with the root of our problems instead of avoiding them. Overall, the song "Look Up" encourages people to be more mindful and intentional in their lives and to seek meaning and fulfillment instead of just going through the motions.

That shift in scale by Ludwig at 4:06, how the rhythm begins to climb, the melody changing and ascending, the instrumentation then speeding up until it reaches a triumphant climax at 4:46…this music is exquisite, emotionally powerful, and exhilarating…and fits with all the breathtaking imagery. The score is going to be something special. Wow!
