The New Zealand rock band have released three albums - 2004's platinum selling 'You Are Here', 2007's multi-platinum selling 'Second Hand Planet', and 2010's 'Until The End Of Time'.
Opshop were winners of the coveted 'Peoples Choice Award' at the 2007 New Zealand Music Awards. Also in 2007 their single “Maybe” achieved the honour of being the biggest song at New Zealand radio ever, holding the #1 most-played spot for 12 consecutive weeks.
Opshop describe their sound like this: "An equal opportunistic grab bag of semi-funkster pop and crackle 'muesli' rock. We like playing music that sounds nice and loud. And dirty and quiet and every nook 'n' cranny in between. If you're not sure what it is. Its likely to be ours".
SECRETS
Opshop Lyrics

When you can still see
Only so far
When will you name the pariahs
You know you want them
They know they want you
But if this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself (yourself)
Go tell everyone that comes tonight
To run away
Backwards or forwards
Suddenly I'm cold
I'm cold
I'm cold
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
Oh
(Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh)
(Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh)
(Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh)
(Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh)
(Uh uh uh uh uh uh uh)
“The reason for the intensive propaganda,
Is to keep people from thinking about these things”
[Instrumental]
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
If this is your secret
You can keep it to yourself
In Opshop's song "Secrets," the lyrics seem to address the idea of hidden truths and the manipulation of information. The opening lines "Why do you send in the cameras when you can still see only so far" suggest that cameras are being used to capture a limited representation of the truth. The subsequent line, "When will you name the pariahs you know you want them, they know they want you" seems to indicate that there are people who are being targeted or scapegoated, and the truth about the situation is being concealed.
The chorus, "If this is your secret, you can keep it to yourself" is repeated several times in the song, emphasizing the idea of secrets being kept and possibly even the idea of power dynamics involved in the withholding of information. This is contrasted with the line "Go tell everyone that comes tonight to run away, backwards or forwards" which seems to indicate a warning to others to be cautious or possibly even flee from the situation.
The instrumental break, accompanied by the quote "The reason for the intensive propaganda is to keep people from thinking about these things" seems to further emphasize the idea of information being controlled or manipulated. The repetition of the "uh uh uh uh uh uh uh" sounds at the end, and the final line "If this is your secret, you can keep it to yourself" create a sense of unresolved tension and unease.
Overall, Opshop's "Secrets" seems to explore the idea of hidden truths and the manipulation of information. The lyrics suggest a warning about the potential dangers of powerful people or forces concealing information, and the importance of being cautious and willing to seek out the truth.
