On the Surface
Opus Lyrics

LIKE A SPIDER ON THE WATER
- LIKE A SDTEAMBOAT ON THE SEA
LIKE THE ROCKS IN WHISKEY - SODA
- I AM SWIMMIN' ON THE SURFACE
LIKE A WAVE UPON THE OCEAN
- LIKE A LEAF ON A POOL
LIKE THE REASON ON EMOTION
- I AM SWIMMIN' ON THE SURFACE

I'M TRYIN' TO GET CLOSER TO
- I TRY TO BREAK THOSE WALLS
IN VAIN, I PUSH BUT CAN'T GET THROUGH
- I FAIL TO TOUCH YOUR SOUL
I'DLIKE TO SEE INSIDE THE CASE
- I'D LIKE TO FIND WHAT COUNTS
INSTEAD I HIDE BEHIND MY FACE
- I'M DRIFTIN' ROUND AND ROUND
ON THE SURFACE

LIKE A LIGHTBEAM FROMM A MIRROR
- LIKE A HAMMER FROM A STRING
LIKE AN ARROW FROM A HERO
- I'M REBOUNDING FROM THE SURFACE
LIKE A HEAD THROUGH A BRICKWALL
- LIKE A SOUND THROUGH A DEAF MAN'S EAR
LIKE THE TRUTH THROUGH A SICK SOUL
- I CAN'T PIERCE THROUGH THE SURFACE

I'M TRYIN' TO GET...

LIKE A SPIDER ON THE WATER
- LIKE A STEAMBOAT ON THE SEA
LIKE THE ROCKS IN WHISKEY - SODA
- LIKE IDEAS I DON'T AGREE TO
LIKE A TREE TRUNK ON THE RIVER
- LIKE A BOTTLE ON A CREEK
ALIKE DOUBT THAT CAN'T TOUCH BELIEVERS
- I AM SWIMMIN' ON THE SURFACE

RIGHT NOW I MUST GET CLOSER TO
- I HAVE TO BREAK THOSE WALLS
I'LL PUSH AND SHOVE TIL I GET THROUGH
- TIL I CAN FEEL YOUR SOUL
I WANNA SEE INSIDE THE CASE
- I WANNA FIND WHAT COUNTS
I'LL CEASE TO HIDE BEHIND MY FACE

- ENOUGH OR DRIFTIN'ROUND
ON THE SURFACE

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Opus's song "On The Surface" convey the struggle of an individual who is trying to connect with someone else on a deeper level but is unable to break through the surface. The first stanza compares the individual's experience of swimming on the surface with different things like a spider on the water or a leaf on a pool. The second stanza portrays the individual's unsuccessful attempts to get closer to the other person, breaking walls and touching their soul but failing to do so. The third stanza continues the motif of rebounding from the surface and highlights the inability to penetrate through it.

The last chorus shows a change in attitude, as the individual is determined to get closer and break down the walls to finally connect with the other person. The song's title, "On The Surface," reinforces the idea of the individuals being stuck at a superficial level, unable to move deeper and connect on a more profound level.
