Auld Lang Syne
Orchestra & Chorus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp
And surely I'll have mine
And we'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine
But we wandered many weary miles
Since auld lang syne

Since auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne

And here's my hand my trusty friend
And give me your hand too
Oh, we'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne

And we'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" by Orchestra & Chorus capture the emotions of reflection, friendship, and connection that arise as we bid farewell to the past and welcome the new year. The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" translates to "old long since" or "times gone by," emphasizing the nostalgic and sentimental nature of the song.

The opening lines ask a rhetorical question: Should old acquaintances be forgotten and never brought to mind? It invites us to ponder whether we should let go of past friendships and memories, or whether we should hold dear to them, acknowledging the importance of cherishing and remembering the people who have been part of our lives.

The repetition of the phrase "For auld lang syne" throughout the song emphasizes the idea that, regardless of the passing of time, we should remember and value the connections we have made. It serves as a reminder to maintain a sense of kindness and goodwill towards others, as symbolized by the line "We'll take a cup of kindness yet." This suggests that even as time goes on, we can still share moments of warmth and compassion with those around us.

The following verse introduces the imagery of two individuals drinking together, using the Scottish term "pint-stowp" to describe their drink. It suggests that as they raise their glasses, they are toasting to friendship, camaraderie, and shared experiences. This line reinforces the idea that old memories and relationships can be celebrated and enjoyed, despite any hardships or distance that may have arisen over time.

The verse that follows reflects on the past adventures and moments shared by the two people singing the song. It reminds us that life is a journey and that we may have traveled far since those earlier days. Despite the weary miles and changes that have occurred, the sentiment of "For auld lang syne" remains, emphasizing the enduring value of friendship and the importance of reminiscing about shared experiences.

The final verse brings the song to a close by extending a hand of friendship and unity. It encourages a mutual bond between friends and an acknowledgement that, even if physically separated, they can still find solace and support in each other. The idea of "taking a cup of kindness" emphasizes the notion that as we move forward into the future, it is essential to carry with us the love and connection we have experienced in the past.

In summary, "Auld Lang Syne" is a song that encourages us to remember and appreciate the friendships and experiences that have shaped our lives. It serves as a reminder to embrace moments of kindness, to toast to the memories we have created, and to maintain lasting relationships, regardless of the passage of time. It captures the bittersweet emotions of saying farewell to the past while also welcoming the promises and possibilities of the future.

I thought I’d listen to this in 2021. I’m always looking forward to hearing this tune with the orchestra, but every year in Times Square they only play a portion of it only to have Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York play, then it goes to Ray Charles rendition of America the beautiful, which in my humblest opinion would sound more appropriate on the the 4th of July!

Happy New Year to you all and here's a toast to the future, a toast to the past, and a toast to our friends, far and near. May the future be pleasant; The past a bright dream; May our friends remain faithful and dear.
