Original Broadway Cast Lyrics

ICE (spoken)
You wanna live in this lousy world? Play it cool!

ACTION
I wanna get even!

ICE
Get cool!

A-RAB
I wanna bust!

ICE
Bust cool!

ACTION
I wanna go!

ICE
Go cool!

(sung)
Boy, boy, crazy boy
Get cool boy
Got a rocket in your pocket
Keep cooly cool boy
Don't get hot
'Cause man you got
Some high times ahead
Take it slow
And Daddy-O
You can live it up and die in bed

Boy, boy, crazy boy
Stay loose boy
Breeze it, buzz it
Easy does it
Turn off the juice boy!
Go man go
But not like a yo-yo school boy
Just play it cool boy
Real cool

(spoken)
Easy Action

Cool it A-rab... Cool it...

ALL (sung)
Boy, boy, crazy boy
Stay loose boy
Breeze it, buzz it
Easy does it
Turn off the juice boy!

ICE
Just play it cool boy
Real cool

(spoken)
OK. Let's go.

Overall Meaning

The song "Cool" is from the original Broadway cast version of West Side Story. In this song, the characters are discussing the idea of "cool" and how it can help them navigate the challenges of their lives. The song is a conversation between multiple characters, including Ice, Action, and A-Rab.

In the opening lines, Ice asks if they want to live in this "lousy" world, suggesting that in order to survive in their tough environment, they need to "play it cool." This sets the theme for the song, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a cool demeanor in difficult situations.

Action chimes in, expressing his desire for revenge, to "get even." In response, Ice reinforces the notion of remaining cool in this pursuit, instructing him to "get cool." A-Rab also expresses his desire to cause trouble, or "bust," and Ice again reminds him to do it in a cool manner, telling him to "bust cool."

As the song turns into a sung section, Ice addresses the singer, referred to as "boy." He encourages him to keep cool and not let his temper or emotions get the best of him. Ice suggests that there are exciting times ahead for him, but he should take it slow and enjoy life while still being mindful of the consequences.

The lyrics continue with the phrase "Daddy-O," a slang term for a man, suggesting a sense of camaraderie or mentorship. It implies that the singer can have a full and fulfilling life while still remaining cool. The repetitive lines of "boy, boy, crazy boy" and "stay loose boy" further highlight the importance of maintaining composure and not getting caught up in the chaos of their surroundings.

The characters then chant "breeze it, buzz it, easy does it, turn off the juice boy!" This can be interpreted as a reminder to not let their passions or energy levels get too high. Instead, they should find a balance and keep their actions under control.

The song concludes with Ice's instruction to "just play it cool boy, real cool." This final line encapsulates the entire meaning of the song, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a cool demeanor in order to navigate the challenges they face in their lives.

Overall, the lyrics of this song convey the idea that being cool, in both attitude and action, is a valuable trait to have when dealing with the hardships of their world. It encourages the characters to approach their situations with composure and control, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and successful life.

Just hearing this passable audio of Betty Buckley's "Memory" give me chills. Imagine being in the theater when she performed. She'd suck the oxygen out of your lungs. Powerful!

I love these costumes! Especially the variety in the wig lengths— I think that’s been a little bit lost over the years.

For anyone criticizing the dance, Dame Gillian Lynne (choreographer) wanted this show to not be a jazz show or a balletic show, she wanted this to be something different, which they achieved. You have to open your eyes and look at it. I've loved this show for most of my life and have been in it and watched the movie hundreds of times and saw it live three times. It's a metaphor for being accepted where you came from because Grizabella left the tribe to go find success as the "glamour cat" but she didn't succeed, so she came back to the tribe, and they didn't accept her because she left. Then, Victoria the White Cat sees the good in her and accepts her back.

Videos of then are the treasures for now and the future!
The show has developed so much in the course of the last 30 years, that it's just wonderful to see how the originals did it.
And Betty Buckley is simply phenomenal!

@BallJoinedWing

Yea, while I loved seeing this it also really made me appreciate just how much polish went into the recorded version.

@ChasehaWing

I kinda love this. This is the raw form of Cats, and even through the blurry lens of the camera, it's amazing to see the original show and compare it from here to now. The makeup itself is amazing in it's own way. The scariness in it's own way is beautiful...

I wish I could watch the whole show throughout the different generations.

The best performance of this Broadway musical ever! It is perfect! The very Pretty and extremely talented actress singer, dance and entertainer Betty Buckley is the best and one and only Grizabella, the Glamour Cat and received the Tony for best actress in a Broadway Musical for Cats in 1983! The song Memory truly belongs only to Betty Buckley! The original entire Broadway Cats cast are excellent and the best ever! They are perfect! Everything is perfect! I was born in the late fall of 1978. I remember watching this! Thank you so much for posting and sharing this!
