You Did It
Original Broadway Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was younger than you are now
When I was given my first command
I led my men straight into a massacre
I witnessed their deaths firsthand
I made every mistake
And felt the shame rise in me
And even now I lie awake
Knowing history has its eyes on me (whoa)

History has its eyes on me
Whoa
Whoa
Yeah

Let me tell you what I wish I'd known
When I was young and dreamed of glory
You have no control

Who lives, who dies, who tells your story

I know that we can win
I know that greatness lies in you
But remember from here on in

History has its eyes on you

Whoa

Whoa
History has its eyes on you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "You Did It" from the Original Broadway Cast's musical Hamilton convey a powerful message about the weight of history and the consequences of one's actions. The song is sung by George Washington, the first President of the United States, and reflects on his past experiences and the burdens of leadership.

The opening lines illustrate Washington's introspection as he reflects on his younger days, comparing his own age and experience to that of the listener. He reveals that when he was given his first command, he led his men into a disastrous battle where he witnessed their deaths. This experience led to a deep sense of guilt and shame that still haunts him at night.

The phrase "Knowing history has its eyes on me" emphasizes the idea that Washington is aware of the lasting impact his decisions and actions will have on the course of history. He feels the weight of responsibility and understands that his actions will be scrutinized by future generations.

In the following verse, Washington imparts a valuable lesson to the listener, sharing what he wishes he had known when he was young and aspiring for greatness. He tells them that they have no control over who lives, who dies, and who gets to tell their story. This highlights the unpredictable nature of life and the fact that one's legacy is often shaped by external factors beyond their control.

However, despite this realization, Washington expresses his belief in the listener's potential for greatness and the possibility of victory. He encourages them to remember that history has its eyes on them, suggesting that their actions have the power to shape the course of history just as his own did.

Overall, "You Did It" serves as a reflection on the weight of leadership, the consequences of one's decisions, and the enduring impact of history on individuals and society.

You can't stop an avalanche
As it races down the hill
You can try to stop the seasons, girl
But you know you never will
And you can try to stop my dancin' feet
But I just cannot stand still
'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums
Then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat
Ever since this whole world began
A woman found out if she shook it
She could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
The best that I can today
'Cause you cant stop the motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna, but I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!
You can't stop the river as it rushes to the sea
You can try to stop the hands of time, but you know it just can't be!
And if they try to stop us, Seaweed, I've got the N double A.C.P.
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night
So I'm gonna shake and shimmy it with all of my might today
'Cause you cant stop the motion of the ocean or the rain from above
You can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you cant stop the beat!
You can't stop my happiness, 'cause I like the way I am
And you just can't stop my knife and fork when I see a Christmas Ham!
So, if you don't like the way I look, well, I just don't give a damn!
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my hearts keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat
Ever since this whole world began
A woman found out if she shook it she could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the sun in the sky
You can wonder, if you wanna, but I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down, I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!
Oh, Oh, Oh
You can't stop today (No!)
As it comes speeding 'round the track (oooh, child yes!)
Yesterday is history (be gone!)
And it's never comin' back! (look ahead, 'cause)
'Cause tomorrow is a brand new day, and it don't know white from black (yeah!)
'Cause the world keeps spinnin' round and round
And my heart's keepin' time to the speed of sound
I was lost 'til I heard the drums, then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night
So I'm gonna shake and shimmy it with all of my might today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean, or the rain from above
They can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
Aah, aah, aah
Ahh, ahh, ahh
Ahh, ahh, ahh ahh
Ever since we first saw the sign
A man or woman like to shake it when the day is ooh ooh
And so we're gonna shake and shimmy it and have some fun today!
'Cause you can't stop the motion of the ocean or the rain from above
You can try to stop the paradise we're dreamin' of
But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay!
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat
You can't stop the beat

+Bianca Dela Torre IKR Kerry Butler is a good singer. Also spread the word, Hairspray is NBC's live TV musical

@manuelorozco7760

Christian Carrington I agree Ariana sounds awesome but I don't want to compare her to Kerry or Amanda.

@mariaviudez7281

Christian Carrington No she doesn't. She sounds waaaay to modern especially because this is based on the 60s. The white girls didnt sing like that in the 60s. If she were to use her old Broadway voice she would have done perfect. 😊😊

@alexcarey5974

Manuel Orozco this wasn't the one Ariana was in

@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913

Alex Carey that's not what they are saying. Someone said that Ariana was better, but someone said otherwise.
