Common Ground
Our Last Night Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know we want to do the right thing
But the needle in our compass is trembling
Trapped in the flame as our house burns down
Left for dead cause we can't find common ground
We can't find common ground so we agree to burn it down
We can't let it burn down so we need to find common ground

It's so hard to find the truth
When the other side wants to bury you, to bury you

And it's so hard to find a way
When the other side wants to play you like a game
It's all about who's wrong and who's right
Don't wanna learn, we just wanna fight

If different thinkers are enemies, just think what we could be, if our thoughts were in harmony

I know we want to do the right thing
But the needle in our compass is trembling
Trapped in the flame as our house burns down
Left for dead cause we can't find common ground
We can't find common ground so we agree to burn it down
We can't let it burn down so we need to find common ground

We're stuck in a maze of conviction
Every path leads back to the beginning
It's all about what's wrong and who's right
Don't wanna learn, we just wanna fight

We've been buried alive between dreams and reality, well maybe truth can set us free
I know we want to do the right thing
But the needle in our compass is trembling
Trapped in the flame as our house burns down
Left for dead cause we can't find common ground
Your heart's in the same place
But your mind is a million miles away
And it's forcing us to separate
Your heart's in the same place
But your mind is a million miles away
And it's forcing us to separate
Your heart's in the same place

But your mind is a million miles away
And it's forcing us to separate

Overall Meaning

"Our Last Night's" song Common Ground is a powerful commentary on the current state of discourse and polarization within our society. The lyrics focus on the difficulty of finding common ground and compromise in a world where people are quick to take sides and see those with differing opinions as the enemy. The metaphor of a burning house represents the urgency of the situation and the need for action.

The first verse reveals the frustrating reality that although many people want to make things right, they are lost and confused by the conflicting information and opinions they encounter. The line "Trapped in the flame as our house burns down" emphasizes the dangerous nature of this situation, while "Left for dead cause we can't find common ground" reveals the dire consequences that can result from such inability to find commonality.

The second verse delves deeper into the roots of the problem, revealing that the issue is not just a matter of differing opinions, but rather a refusal to listen and understand each other. The line "Don't wanna learn, we just wanna fight" emphasizes that people are more concerned about being right than learning from others. The line "If different thinkers are enemies, just think what we could be, if our thoughts were in harmony" suggests that progress can only be made if everyone is willing to work together and appreciate different perspectives.

Overall, Common Ground is a powerful commentary on the importance of finding commonality and understanding amidst the chaos and confusion of modern society.

This band didn't sell out. They're just growing and maturing with the music they make.

Helios D

true

Doogen

Their album We Will All Evolve was incredible, Age of Ignorance was pretty good as well, everything since then has been decent at best.. Sounds as generic as any other post hardcore band coming out with new music these days.. sucks, cuz I used to love this band. I mean, go back and listen to their songs like "The Air I Breathe" or "Across the Ocean" and tell me this stuff isn't generic.

Bendy

MooChicken9000 well considering they've been releasing all their music independently for like 3 years without a label i'd say they're the exact opposite of selling out just on that fact alone

FirelyGrim

Doogen agreed. Their sound hasn't changed almost at all since Oak Island and that's why I'm just not that into them anymore

Felipe Chaves

gopillar lol that doesn't mean shit, if I ain't got a label but I compose my songs with the intent to sell them the most possible, i'm selling out. And I do feel that's their case, there are parts of their new songs that I wonder "are they even having fun playing/composing this?" because it sounds boring and generic IMO

First when I heard this song didn't like it that much. But now it's one of my favorites. Never stop releasing music guys, you are the best.

It takes some time to understand what it says. We are glad you gave it a chance, and let it sink in! :)
