New Shoes
Overcoats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Always changing my mind
Never picking a side
Oh I feel like I need more time
Cuz I'm still a child
Cuz I'm still a child
Out on the edge, I'm standing tall
That I spilled something on
But it won't be long til I make a move
I've been in the same place
Gotta find my own way
Think I'm gonna go upstate
In my new suede shoes
I'm standing tall
In my new suede shoes
I'm almost 29
But I'm a daddy's girl
Haven't seen the world
I'm old enough to know
How to take a slow dive
In my fake fur coat
On Riverside
Oh I'm out on the edge, I'm standing tall
In my new suede shoes
That I spilled something on
But it won't be long til I make a move
I've been in the same place
Gotta find my own way
Think I'm gonna go upstate
In my new suede shoes
I'm standing tall
In my new suede shoes
In my new suede shoes
Out on the edge
Im standing tall, in my, in my
But it won't be long til I make a move
I've been in the same place
Gotta find my own way
Think I'm gonna go upstate
In my new suede shoes
I'm standing tall
In my new suede shoes
The lyrics of "New Shoes" by Overcoats express a sense of transition and self-discovery. The singer reflects on feeling indecisive and constantly changing her mind, likening herself to a Gemini. She struggles with picking sides and the pressure to make decisions, alluding to a need for more time to grow. The repetition of "I'm still a child" suggests a desire to hold onto her youth and the uncertainty that comes with it.
The song also touches on the idea of stepping into new experiences and embracing change. The line "Out on the edge, I'm standing tall, in my new suede shoes" signifies a boldness and confidence in facing the unknown. Despite spilling something on her shoes, symbolizing imperfections and mistakes, the singer remains determined to make a move and find her own path. The mention of going "upstate" conveys a desire for a fresh start and a journey towards self-discovery.

Overcoats
In the illustration for this tarot card, we create a protective shell for ourselves. Under a sky of birds and amid a landscape of palm trees, we are singing to each other about the utter exhaustion of loving someone and receiving apathy in return. This song is about how, in those moments, everything loses color and joy. It’s about loving someone and asking simply to be treated right in return. We recorded this all in one take, facing each other in the studio. The backdrop is acoustic guitar over a field recording of birds chirping outside our house in Beachwood Canyon, where we were staying while we made the album. This song acts as a question mark, at the end of the record. It’s a final moment of doubt and insecurity, after the triumph of courage and perseverance. The fight is never really over. Found this by coincidence on Spotify. It played after a song a friend sent finished. I'm glad it did. Love it
