Birth of Tension
Overkill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

you're killin'me, your mouth is movin'
but I cannot hear you speak
life's a tragedy. go on livin'
in a world not for the weak
keep your dreams inside your heart
never let the pressure tear you apart
truth is whispered on a breath
loud enough to cover the smell of death

never thought too important to mention
livin' through the birth, the birth of tension
never thought too important to mention
livin' with the tension, tension, tension.

don't you understand too much tension, snap
where you lose your grip
too many demands start at birth, snap
from the bomb you're ripped
leave your dreams inside, behind
never had a reason that you'll never find
tension builds another way
gonna make you all go away

too much tension, all around
too much tension, bring you down
all the pressures in the narrow mind
all the reasons you'll never find
did you kill your father, sleep with your mother
idolize your sister, jealous your brother
did ya kick the dog, were you beat a strap
were you really be abused, were you fakin'
all that too tense

you're killin' me so many ways
so little time to think
life's catastrophe, my glass empty
and I really need a drink
movin' all so very quick
movin' so fast that it makes me sick

let me outta here
livin' ain't livin' with the tension and the fear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Overkill's song "Birth of Tension" paint a picture of a world full of pressure, tension, and anxiety. The opening lines convey frustration and helplessness as the singer is unable to hear what someone else is saying, perhaps due to their own internal struggle. The idea of life being a tragedy is brought up, indicating a general sense of pessimism and darkness. Despite this, the singer advises to keep dreams inside one's heart and not let pressure overcome them. The truth is whispered, hinting at some knowledge or insight that is being kept secret or suppressed. The chorus refers to the birth of tension, perhaps suggesting that this perpetual state of stress and strain has been around since the beginning of time, or at least since one's birth.

The second stanza delves deeper into the consequences of too much tension, warning that it can cause a person to snap and lose grip. There are too many demands placed on people from birth, and the result can be explosive, like a bomb going off. Leaving dreams behind and not finding a reason to live makes tension build in another way, a way that will make everyone go away. The bridge questions the listener about past experiences, asking if they have engaged in destructive behaviors like killing a father or sleeping with a mother, or perhaps suffered abuse or faked it. The final stanza brings the song back around to the singer's own struggles, expressing a need to escape the overwhelming tension and fear.

Overall, the lyrics paint a bleak and intense picture of modern life, full of pressure, stress, and fear. The song encourages listeners to keep their dreams alive and not let the pressure tear them apart.

32 two years later and this album still cranks me up. Birth of Tension is probably my fave on this album. I bought this album at a music store in the Annapolis with a friend. It was summer, i only had my learners permit, but we had to got to the music store. So i drove... then got caught by my aunt on the way home. Good old days.
