To date, Overkill has released nineteen studio albums, an album of cover songs, two EPs, one demo tape and three live albums. They were one of the first thrash metal bands to sign to a major label (having signed to Atlantic Records in 1986), and rose to fame as part of the genre's movement of the mid-to-late 1980s, along with the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) as well as Exodus and Testament. Overkill achieved their first mainstream success with its second studio album and Atlantic debut, Taking Over (1987), which peaked at number 191 on the Billboard 200. The band's next five studio albums—Under the Influence (1988), The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope (1991), I Hear Black (1993) and W.F.O. (1994)—were also successful on the Billboard charts, with the latter two cracking the top ten on the Top Heatseekers chart. Following their split from Atlantic in 1995, Overkill went through some label changes, but continued to enjoy moderate underground success, particularly in Europe and Japan. The band experienced a resurgence of popularity in the U.S. during the 2010s, with three of their studio albums released that decade—The Electric Age (2012), White Devil Armory (2014) and The Grinding Wheel (2017)—reaching the top 100 on the charts. Overkill has sold over 16 million records worldwide; they are also estimated to have sold more than 625,000 records in the United States since the beginning of the SoundScan era.

Endless War
Overkill Lyrics

Slow going the forgiving night
I'm a soldier in an endless war
Chained down to the money whore
I'm counting my days
Yea jaded - oh, I'm getting sicker
I'm going astray
First - last and all in between
Lets give them more hell then they've ever seen
Give them something to remember
Give them how and why and what your living for
First - last and all in between
The endless war
Eyes dancing to a krankin' fit
Blood spillin' in the heart I'm hit
Lord knows I can't remember when
I'll be up before you count to ten
Uncounting my days
Yea jaded - oh, I'm getting sicker
I'm going astray
Yea faded - oh I'm feeling sicker
Oh yeah, give me the dream, give me the all right
Make it a laser beam, spectacular spotlight
Brighter than the sun on a summer day
A wind to chase my clouds away
Oh yeah give me the dream
Make it be all right
Oh yeah give me a shot, set me a fire
Burning like the sun on a metal cage
A wind that fans the flames of rage
Oh yeah give me a shot, set me a fire
Oh yeah give me the dream
Come faster than the speed of dead
Slow going unforgiving red
I'm a soldier in the endless war
Unchained from the endless gore
I'm counting my days
Yea jaded - oh, I'm getting sicker
I'm going astray
Yea faded - oh I'm feeling sicker
Come faster than the speed of light
Slow going the forgiving night
I'm a soldier in an endless war
The lyrics to Overkill's song Endless War discuss the life of a soldier, and the endless nature of conflict. The repetition of the phrase "endless war" emphasizes the futility of the cycle of violence and the toll it takes on those who fight it. The first verse describes the soldier's state of mind, feeling chained to the "money whore" and counting down his days. He confesses to feeling jaded and sick as the war drags on, hinting at the mental and emotional toll it has taken.
The chorus urges the soldiers to fight harder, to give their enemies "more hell than they've ever seen." It encourages them to have a purpose behind their fighting, to give "how and why and what your living for." The repetition of "first - last and all in between" emphasizes the importance of every moment of the endless war.
The second verse describes the physical danger the soldier faces, with his eyes dancing and blood spilling. He admits to losing track of time, and feeling even sicker as a result. The bridge and final chorus express a desire for escape from the endless war, whether it be through a dream or a shot that sets him on fire. The final verse ends on a slightly more optimistic note, with the soldier unchained from the endless gore of war, but still fighting.
Overall, Endless War is a bleak but powerful examination of the toll that conflict takes on those who fight. It is a call to action to fight harder and to have a purpose behind the endless violence.
