To date, Overkill has released nineteen studio albums, an album of cover songs, two EPs, one demo tape and three live albums. They were one of the first thrash metal bands to sign to a major label (having signed to Atlantic Records in 1986), and rose to fame as part of the genre's movement of the mid-to-late 1980s, along with the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) as well as Exodus and Testament. Overkill achieved their first mainstream success with its second studio album and Atlantic debut, Taking Over (1987), which peaked at number 191 on the Billboard 200. The band's next five studio albums—Under the Influence (1988), The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope (1991), I Hear Black (1993) and W.F.O. (1994)—were also successful on the Billboard charts, with the latter two cracking the top ten on the Top Heatseekers chart. Following their split from Atlantic in 1995, Overkill went through some label changes, but continued to enjoy moderate underground success, particularly in Europe and Japan. The band experienced a resurgence of popularity in the U.S. during the 2010s, with three of their studio albums released that decade—The Electric Age (2012), White Devil Armory (2014) and The Grinding Wheel (2017)—reaching the top 100 on the charts. Overkill has sold over 16 million records worldwide; they are also estimated to have sold more than 625,000 records in the United States since the beginning of the SoundScan era.

Overkill Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And doctrines of fools will last.
I am just trying to cope,
Into my horroscope.
Through eyes and ears they bleed,
Reciting their holy creed.
Heeding but one request,
Bless me in darkened days,
Down to my knees I pray.
I am just trying to cope,
Within this horrorscope.
In the wake of all frustration,
I begin to loose control.
Watched as the weapons fired,
Bombs burst in the air...
Burned in the fields of fire!
Standing in the middle of nowhere.
Watched as the weapons fired,
Baptized in fields of fire!
Well,
The change in here, an' the future clear.
I can feel it coming.
So full of hate, its geting late!
Yeah, I know its coming.
When all the choice turned to just one voice,
Yeah, the wind is turning.
This is your horrorscope...
Words laced with blasphemy,
Drip with sincerity.
Falling into the plan,
Like sacrificial lambs.
Hearing the words and said,
Rings like nail, to the head.
Now I can see the stars,
I know we have gone too far.
Baptized in fields of fire,
Watched as the weapons fired.
This is your horoscope
The lyrics of Horrorscope by Overkill are rife with elements of millenarianism, a belief system in which the present age will eventually come to a catastrophic end, and a new era will be initiated. The song is not exclusively apocalyptic, but it does convey an existentialist ethos built around themes of desperation, chaos, and death. Critical moments have passed, and only the beliefs of fools persist. The singer is trying to make sense of the world through his horoscope. He relies on his star sign to navigate through his present circumstances, which makes it seem as if he is looking for answers in the stars.
At this point, the song becomes more explicit about what the singer is experiencing. He is surrounded by people who are reciting their holy creed blindy, without critical thinking. The singer is tired of hearing it and wants some relief. He prays to be blessed in the darkest of moments. The chorus repeats the idea of the horror that is coming, one that the singer must cope with. The rest of the song tells a narrative of watching as weapons were fired and bombs exploded, signaling a loss of control.
