To date, Overkill has released nineteen studio albums, an album of cover songs, two EPs, one demo tape and three live albums. They were one of the first thrash metal bands to sign to a major label (having signed to Atlantic Records in 1986), and rose to fame as part of the genre's movement of the mid-to-late 1980s, along with the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) as well as Exodus and Testament. Overkill achieved their first mainstream success with its second studio album and Atlantic debut, Taking Over (1987), which peaked at number 191 on the Billboard 200. The band's next five studio albums—Under the Influence (1988), The Years of Decay (1989), Horrorscope (1991), I Hear Black (1993) and W.F.O. (1994)—were also successful on the Billboard charts, with the latter two cracking the top ten on the Top Heatseekers chart. Following their split from Atlantic in 1995, Overkill went through some label changes, but continued to enjoy moderate underground success, particularly in Europe and Japan. The band experienced a resurgence of popularity in the U.S. during the 2010s, with three of their studio albums released that decade—The Electric Age (2012), White Devil Armory (2014) and The Grinding Wheel (2017)—reaching the top 100 on the charts. Overkill has sold over 16 million records worldwide; they are also estimated to have sold more than 625,000 records in the United States since the beginning of the SoundScan era.

Overkill Lyrics

Oh yeah not to be outdone on a cold independence day
Come on now will you give me the time
It's a kingpin move of a victimless crime
With the list in blood what we do achieve
Like a black coat preacher screams I do believe
Runnin' like a freight train on an iron rail
It's all yours to keep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn don't give it away
Own it when you sleep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn
Oh yeah there's the target son with a bull's eye on his heart
Yeah yeah get to hunting one adrenaline is off the chart
Here we go with our limited time
As the siren sounds hear the bells chime
There's a list in blood and shoulders pinned
The black coat preacher screams oh lord I've sinned
Runnin' like a freight train on an iron rail
Runaway freight train with your bill of sale
It's all yours to keep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn don't give it away
Own it when you sleep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn
They try and end my life everywhere I turn
But least and not forgetful
I own it when it burns own it when it burns
One more for the movement as we march into the turns
And one more for improvement
So we can own it when it burns
Oh no there he goes again think he's gonna get away
Oh yeah one more amen on a dead independence day
Come on now will you give me the time
It's a kingpin move of a victim filled crime
With the list in blood what we do achieve
Like a black coat preacher screams I do believe
Runnin' like a freight train on an iron rail
Runaway freight train with your bill of sale
It's all yours to keep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn don't give it away
Own it when you sleep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn don't give it away
It's all yours to keep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn don't give it away
Own it when you sleep don't give it away
It's all yours to burn
The lyrics appear to be about taking control and ownership of one's life and decisions, even if it means going against societal norms or expectations. The lines "It's all yours to keep don't give it away" and "Own it when you sleep don't give it away" suggest holding onto one's beliefs and values, even when faced with opposition. The lyrics also touch on themes of rebellion and independence.
The imagery of a "runaway freight train" and the repeated references to a "list in blood" give the lyrics a sense of urgency and danger. The lines "With the list in blood what we do achieve/Like a black coat preacher screams I do believe" suggest that the actions being taken are important and meaningful, even if they are considered unconventional.
The reference to "dead independence day" may be a critique of the commercialization of holidays and the loss of their original meaning. Overall, the lyrics encourage the listener to take charge of their life and not let anyone else dictate their choices.
