Colorado Song
Ozark Mountain Daredevils Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(GUITAR INTO)
I'm going back to Colorado
rollin' down the highway
just my life to carry
it's written in the wind
again

I will drink from the river
that runs down from the mountain
just my life returning
I feel it in the wind
again
(GUITAR SOLO)

aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...
aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...
aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...
aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...
aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...aaaahhhhh...
lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala...
lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala...
lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala...

lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala...
lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala......lalalalala...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Colorado Song" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils seem to express a longing for a certain place and way of life. The singer talks about driving down a highway with only their life's possessions with them, headed back to Colorado. The line "just my life to carry" suggests a certain simplicity, a desire to shed all material possessions and start anew. The river that runs down from the mountain represents a source of life and renewal, something the singer seems to be seeking out. The repetition of the phrase "I feel it in the wind again" suggests that the singer has some strong emotional connection to this place and this way of life, and that they are returning to it after some time away. The guitar solo in the middle of the song adds to the sense of longing and nostalgia.

The overall mood of the song is wistful and mournful, suggesting that the singer has experienced some hardship or discomfort in the time since they last visited Colorado. The song seems to be about a search for something, perhaps a sense of peace or clarity. It is possible that the memory of Colorado represents a simpler, more authentic way of life that the singer is striving to recapture. Towards the end of the song, the repeated "aaaahhhhh" and "lalalalala" vocalizations create a dreamy, almost hypnotic effect, as though the singer is losing themselves in their memories of Colorado.

In rural Missouri on a gravel road, long ago, I sit in a recliner staring out the window to the west with this song up and full base and no one around, at dusk when daytime life ebbs to the resolution of night, the chair and floor vibrate and then the angels sing and waves of electricity wash back and forth through my body and I see through watering eyes, I see eternity and I see mortality and I see love and my time is precious and I realize I must let everyone who will listen, know that I love them!

I might suggest he’s seeing at end of life how important the big things are as opposed to how unimportant satisfying our daily needs are considering how we treat people now and in the past. A shift in priorities. Seeing the bigger picture

Sounds like you had a wonderful epiphany of faith and I would guess you watched an awesome sunset to move you to that extent!

I lived most of my life in Missouri's Ozark mountains, but I now live in Colorado. I loved this song as a kid. It's so hauntingly beautiful.
It has even more meaning to me now. It's still so relevant, even after all these years.
