Don't Let Me Get Me
P!nk Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can't take direction, and my socks are never clean
Teachers dated me, my parents hated me
I was always in a fight 'cause I can't do nothin' right
Every day I fight a war against the mirror
I can't take the person starin' back at me
I'm a hazard to myself
Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else
I wanna be somebody else, yeah
La told me, "You'll be a pop star,
All you have to change is everything you are"
Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears
She's so pretty, that just ain't me
Doctor, doctor, won't you please prescribe me somethin'
A day in the life of someone else?
'Cause I'm a hazard to myself
Don't let me get me, no
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else
Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else
Doctor, doctor, won't you please prescribe me somethin'
A day in the life of someone else?
Don't let me get me
Oh I'm a hazard to myself
Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
It's bad when you annoy yourself, yourself
So irritating, so irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else
Don't let me get me
I'm my own worst enemy
Don't let me get me
It's bad when you annoy yourself
So irritating
Don't wanna be my friend no more
I wanna be somebody else (Don't let me get me, don't let me get me)
In P!nk's song "Don't Let Me Get Me," she talks about her struggles with self-image and how she feels like she is her own worst enemy. The song starts off with her mentioning how she's never won first place, doesn't support the team, can't take directions, and her socks are never clean. She also talks about how her teachers and parents didn't like her and how she was always in fights because she couldn't do anything right.
But the real struggle, as she mentions in the chorus, is with the person she sees in the mirror, which leads to a battle against herself every day. She expresses frustration with herself and how she annoys herself with her faults. She also talks about how she wants to be somebody else and not annoying.
La, possibly a record executive or producer, tells her she'll be a pop star if she changes everything about herself. But P!nk is tired of being compared to Britney Spears, who she says is pretty and that just isn't her.
The repeated line "Doctor, doctor, won't you please prescribe me somethin'" could suggest that she wants a quick fix to make herself someone else entirely. This song is relatable to anyone who has felt insecure or dissatisfied with themselves and wished they could be someone else.
