I LOVE these videos, you can tell how much compassion & empathy he has towards these animals, you can also see the passion he has for working with these pups!

As a viewer though, I wish that the content when working with the dogs was specifically just the tactics and the training of the dogs. I completely understand that it is equally as important to explain why certain tactics or trainings are used for each specific dog, absolutely.

I just wish that those conversations were saved for afterwards, maybe just a sit down conversation between him and the owners to get into why the dog behaves certain ways and why he uses what tactics.

Just as a viewer, especially when you are watching and trying to take notes to use towards your own dog, he doesn’t just give the direction and then we get to watch the dog respond, he gives the direction and then goes into long drawn out explanations during the training, and for me it would be super overwhelming if I was in that situation with my dog. I wouldn’t even retain any of that information after a certain point lol it is just sooo much with the training of the stressed out/aggressive dog, the nervous/anxious owner just trying to use the directions that he is giving them and try to do it repeatedly, but then the entire time he is constantly talking when I wish those long drawn out explanations were saved for afterwards during a sit down conversation 🤷🏼‍♀️

Again, just my opinion, I am by no means an expert in any of this, just an avid viewer, I love this channel & I respect what you & your team do immensely! Just some constructive criticism that comes from a good place with good intentions 💕❤️💕❤️💕

@Christian Dinapoli you can start training your puppy as soon as you bring them home. Typically at 8 weeks..... I have a 4 month old puppy and I've done sooooo much research! It has inspired me to become a certified dog trainer which I am currently working on. It's never too early to start training your puppy. Just keep in mind that the younger the puppy, the shorter the attention span. So be patient and consistent. It pays off in the long run!

Amazing video! I love this problem solving stuff. Dogs can be so complicated at times. It's just like raising kids I think...... Things can go wrong when they are raised in daycare which of course can't be avoided at times. Be careful what daycare you bring your dog to. Be careful who you trust your puppy with. Fear and insecurity, lack of obedience can cause so many issues. As I go through video after video become more and more aware of what I should or should NOT be doing with my 4 month old puppy. Never stop learning! It's definitely a life long journey with our furry friends but let's not forget that first and foremost they are not humans. They are animals and we have to put them in their place when they don't behave properly. Thank you Tom Davis! You're such an inspiration to me!

It has been roughly 7 months since this video was filmed. In that time, we have come so far, albeit slow progress, and we cannot be more thankful for all the training and support we have received. I wish that I could attach videos in the comment section, but to sum it up, she has a spunky small male hound brother that she has learned to be civil with. She has excelled at obedience, and is a very diligent worker. Her tolerance for strangers entering her sphere has gotten much better, but still cannot be trusted to be loose with any strangers around. She has become much more of an asset to our family and less of a liability through strict protocols and accountability, and we have continued to invest in her training and in her happiness.

My heart hurt so much for her. I’m so glad you both didn’t give up on her and I love Tom’s positive approach. I hated that famous dog trainer who had to be the “alpha.” Dogs are not pack animals. Wolves are pack animals and live in a hierarchy and cooperate. Dogs are social animals not pack animals so need to be corrected positively not brutally. I have seen so many people ruin dogs by abusing them in the misconception that they are the alpha of the pack. Tom is so aware of how each dog sees the environment. I’m blown away and happy for you and Athena.

Athena's update after 2 months after changing our approach:

We've made more progress in the last 2 weeks than ever. We were able to get her obedience to a 95% even with most distractions, and her heel tightened up to perfection using the low level stim with the pressure-until-compliance method. But she was still not complying during high stress distraction or with strangers around. The prong collar was still making her explode if popped as she loaded on a stranger or passing car. So we switched things up again and I bought a Halti lead. Wow, what a difference. It stresses her so much less than the Baskerville muzzle, but allows me to control her whole head and her teeth. I barely have to tug and she is correcting herself and right back in line. The other change we made 2 weeks ago was following the advice of Jeff Gelman and employing the use of a bonker. This one tool immediately made her less reactive, have enough consequence for her bad behaviors, and defer to us 100% of the time. Lastly, we stopped using low level stim and started using high level stim for non compliance (280c set on 40). These changes have allowed us to finally be able to walk her on public roads and trails again and yesterday she was able to meet up close an entire work crew on an active jobsite and another large intact male dog while staying entirely neutral and focusing on me the whole time, for 6 hrs!

This has been an incredibly long journey, one that is not over, but we have a renewed confidence in the skills that both Tom Davis and Jeff Gelman have taught us and we have a happier household because of them.

@Arthur Salaün It is unfortunate that you have misunderstood Jeff's ideology and training principles, but they worked incredibly quickly for us and have allowed us to build the best relationship with Athena that we could've envisioned. 3 months ago we were able to adopt another small male coonhound puppy, and that would not have been possible without the use of the Bonker as a correction tool, nor without the respect we were able to build with her through proper correction techniques. She is a very serious dog, and still to this day, cannot be trusted with anyone outside of our small family. We have been able to successfully board her at Jeff's for a week as well to give us our first vacation since rescuing her, and that is only because they respect and understand her abilities.
What we learned from Tom initially got us on the right track, but we quickly needed to up the ante when she decided what she wanted to do was more important than a level 15 stim or a page from the dogtra remote or a pop on a prong collar. She has become the most obedient and respectful dog that I have ever owned, but that does not come without understanding what limits her genetics have placed on her behavior. It is truly a balance of respect, control, and understanding her own abilities as Tom said during our sessions with him. We cannot set her up to fail unless we can 100% control the outcome.

Really happy to hear about Athena ‘s progress. However, I’m really sad to hear you started following “advice” of Jeff Gellman, after receiving such training from Tom Davis. This guy has nothing to do with balanced training, and his methods are just cruel. While Tom is using the tools in a right manner to correct a behavior, the other guy just want to demonstrate he is an alpha and is ready to hit a dog to do so… Balanced training is about strengthening your relationship with your dog, notably by setting boundaries and making sure actions have consequences. But absolutely not about the making your dog scared and afraid of you to the point they can’t behave as a dog anymore. Sorry for the long message but I really don’t want balanced training to be associated with that guy who is deserving dog training as a whole.

I hope Athena kept progressing in the past few months.

@Brian Williamson if you see this, i get dogs can chew through cages and stuff. Get a outside truck cage. They are mainly used for hunting dogs, its a thick meddle cage with a very very thick mettle cage bars. I havent had any dogs chew or break out. We have had aggressive pits, in the cage and extremely dog stong dogs.

@Mateusz Haba My daughter rescued a male that acted very similarly to other dogs. Very few people he doesn't like, but if you are one of them, watch out. He prefers cats to dogs, but she is slowly trying to socialize him with other dogs. He is 8 though, so it has to go slowly. These dogs are very smart and are strong enough to break the wire cages, so don't trust that they will be contained by one.

I had presa canario once on a foster. Suposed to be all things living agressive. It took like 24-30 hours to develop such separation anexiety that much he lost like 10 kg in weight while 3 days in shelter. Not eating, barely sleeping. First night i was sleeping in a tent in a garden (no house manners, pretty allways outdoor dog). That's because he wanted to chew through metal doors.
I think that is the main reason to think about what owning that type of dog could be if suddenly given away whitout zero warnings.

agreed, sometimes I wonder how the dogs ended up after the clips/episodes. Would be great to maybe do a recheck on some of the dogs once or twice a year to see how they ended up. I don't mean every dog and not the same dog, just a couple of some episodes that were released that year or somehting. It really shows what the training did for people longterm.

The inconsistency this dog received previously has confused all other situations. Having a decent regimen and a routine will be so much clearer for her, she’s a big dog and can’t be left unchecked. The fear that builds from inconsistency will override everything else. A solid routine is a must.

@Slurpp Capone You should definitely look into training your dog to bare teeth and attack on command. Before you say "that's crazy I don't want my dog to be able to attack on command!" it would teach the dog when it is acceptable to bare their teeth and that any time that you don't command it is unacceptable. Similar to dogs jumping up, it can help to teach them the up command while actively correcting when they do it and are not invited.

my dog looks the exact same but he is a 4 month old puppy and the day I got him he started guarding me and my family. He’s a good boy but I want to train him to not end up like the dog in this video. I do want him to guard and be for personal protection but I need him to do that when I say so . Whenever I go outside he just barks at anyone and lunges at everything. I’ve learned to correct him and keep moving but I’m gonna try e collars and learn how to properly use and correct the puppy. Any tips???

I have rescued a pit bull who is reactive to other dogs. She was bumped from one house to another. I was her last chance. I have taken her to classes and watch Tom's videos. She is a complete different dog. As much as I changed her life she has changed mine for the better.

@Amaterasu - Please find a good trainer and keep the dog away from your kids. It's really not smart to have an aggressive dog when you have children. Children are more important than an aggressive dog that can kill them or just bite.

@Amaterasu - I really suggest that you find a good trainer to evaluate the situation fast before the dog hurts your children or anyone else. It is hard to give advice when the dog has to be evaluated by a professional to see trigger points and why the dog is acting the way it does. Sometimes if you correct the dog it could redirect its frustration to you. Look for a positive reinforcement or balanced trainers. Pls don't hesitate get professional help before something happens. I just rescued a bully. He was very unwanted. They told me he should be good with kids but needs a little work with other dogs. He was doing great at first but now is aggressive towards my children and any stranger that comes near. I know he’s actually a giant love bug. I can tell he’s been through some sort of physical abuse by the certain looks he gives. I feel also it’s obvious he has abandonment issues. He barks and lunges at my kids now. He was just fine with them when I first brought him home. I do feel he’s extremely overprotective of me as well. I’m not going to give up on this guy he’s already been through a lot. Any videos in particular you can point me to or any tips would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏻

she is a beautiful animal. There's no way to know what happened at the boarding place, and it cannot be changed so it doesn't matter. Howdy from Texas! We love your videos, they are reinforcing our training and the success of our two Blue Nose Pits. They have come a long way from a year ago! Very informative as usual Tom! Question for you though. If you try and body block a dog and they seem to get more frustrated and try to keep looking around your legs at the distraction and not seem to engage with you as the owner, is this something you would just say don't do? Or would you continue working on it and try to get them more comfortable so it can be used as a method to deter from the distraction? Thanks so much!!

What a great video that stresses the importance of timing and consistency in training and that many dogs are genetically predisposed to react in different ways. Not all dogs are meant to be friends with everyone and nor should they have to. I'm so glad this couple is doing everything they can to keep people safe while giving their dog the best life they can.

The original prong was applied too low on the neck and possibly added to the aggression. Tom used the smaller links and placed it right behind the ears, which is the correct position for a prong.

People that rescue dogs are amazing. Personally with children though, I wouldn’t rescue a dog for this reason.
These owners though are so loyal to him.
If they give up on him, that dog is done.

Yea an aggressive dog around children is never okay because then when it does something not only is the kid dead or injured but then people blame the dog when it was the owners responsibility to keep it away from kids and to train it from far away.

the most difficult part in teaching humans how to train their dogs, is teaching them timing and feel of corrections. if they don’t natural have that instinct, it’s very difficult to teach. you are so patient when working with people, excellent video!

The Hunan's complacency is visible, instead of indignant reaction to her behavior. Every time someone moved away from her lunge, she was rewarded. Also, she kept putting her head at an angle in front.

Speculation: bond is emotional, and she is a gladiator, not a child. There has been interpretation of their "love" as weakness.

I'd love to see more videos of dogs that redirect. My dog has been doing much better lately, but the way he redirects can make things doubly tough. I've received numerous bites (legit bites that broke the skin as well as caused extensive bruises) when he does this, even though I try to be vigilant in watching for it. It's not every time, so it's a bit hard to predict and account for. Most of the training methods you use are great and have worked wonders, but are not shown on dogs that explode this way. I think I've seen one with a doberman, but that's about it... And you only showed snippets of how you worked the dog to get past this. Maxx shows genuine regret after, regardless of many saying dogs can't feel guilty. He immediately acts like an angel the rest of the session after, and is ultra sweet and responsive for a few days, even. No bad dog... He doesn't appear to like being this way! But how do you consistently work with this type of dog? (He's 16% Australian Dingo, if that makes a difference. I think this more primitive mindset is partially responsible.)

ignore your dog do the basics no treats no affection. give a few commands a day then walk away.it may take a good while of this but its better than being bit. tough love mines a bugger he was but a bit better now and hes huge 40odd kgs. dont show your soft with these or they will take advantage, and dont try to bully them either

This dog is having the exact same difficulties as my Zeus. We've been dedicated to training him for success, and it's nice to get some pointers because, unfortunately, we've hit a bit of a wall and he ended up biting someone (we are grateful the guy didn't press charges). If I understood correctly, Athena and Zeus differ in the fact that Athena doesn't have kids at home and Zeus has 5, and we've had Zeus almost his whole life. I think you are very right about dogs "growing into not liking other people". I hope Athena is successful and lives a long, happy life! Good on the owners for being dedicated to her success! 💙🐾

Great video, really enjoy the honesty because more often then not it’s the people. They are in no way bad but it’s those little details. Even with my GSD I realized I was telling him to sit 4 times.

Hi Tom! I work at a daycare and there is this golden poodle that always bites. He wants to play and have our attention so it is not aggressive but a bite is a bite. He does not respond to the spray bottle. How can we enforce good behavior without tools like a prong collar?

Will you be doing follow ups with any of your cases? I had reactivity issues with two of my dogs. I trained leave it and obedience just as you do but without shock or prong. Do you feel these two tools work faster and help the dog learn or is it compliance only? I’m not bashing your use of shock and prong collars but do you think you can change behaviors without them? I appreciate your work in helping save dogs from euthanasia and would love to see 6 month, one year follow up. My dogs are Cane Corsos. I have 5 of them.

OMG!!! This is exactly like my dog only that he is waaaay smaller than yours. Even so, the damage is HUGE. Just few days back, he attacked me while adjusting his prong collar in public. I was at his peripheral view(not front or back) and he just turned and whacked me without warning. I managed to get in ctrl after he tried gg after me 3-4x but its just so emotionally draining stimes. It was a perfect morning to jog with him after an hr before he goes ballistic on me. Just ruin the mood. 😞

My Great Dane when I got him at 4 months old did great walking on a leash for a year and a half. Didn’t react to any distractions and ignored other dogs. Last winter around the time Covid started I didn’t really take him on walks and now he reacts to other dogs, squirrels, rabbits. He’s great with other dogs so I don’t think it’s aggression? Could you possibly give me any tips or advice?

I asked this before cause I’m really curious about how you are supposed to hold the leash. In aggressive dogs, I notice owners hold the leash with the left hand about a foot away from the dog. It seems to me that the owner is expecting failure (only natural) but doesn’t that energy travel down to the dog on a short leash where she feels that a “be on the alert” vibe is the correct response?

The husband especially, wife 2, seem to be doing great with her. Dogs need more people out there like this who will stick with a dog and give them a chance. I love that he said be mindful of the people you have around, and that they listen. Its frustrating, as a owner of a reactivate dog, when they don't listen to ur instructions about how to behave around ur dog. I know that they dont have to listen but if you come to my home just please do it to m.j ake my life and ur visit easier.
