The stage name P.J. Proby was suggested to him by a friend named Sharon Sheeley (Eddie Cochran's girlfriend) who remembered the name of an old high school boyfriend.
P.J. Proby did demos for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and other artists. His greatest hits are "Somewhere", "Maria", "Hold Me", "Niki Hoeky" and "I Apologise". In 1996, Marc Almond produced the album Legend which included the duet single "Yesterday Has Gone".

Maria
They call the wind Maria
Away out here they got a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire Joe,
And they call the wind Maria
Maria blows the stars around
And sends the clouds flying
Maria makes the mountains sound
Like folks were up there dying
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
Before I knew Maria's name
And heard her wail and whining
I had a girl and she had me
And the sun was always shining
But then one day I left my girl
I left her far behind me
And now I'm lost, so gone and lost
Not even God can find me
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
Out here they got a name for rain
For wind and fire only
But when you're lost and all alone
There ain't no word but lonely
And I'm a lost and lonely man
Without a star to guide me
Maria blow my love to me
I need my girl beside me
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
Maria
Maria!
Blow my love to me
"They Call the Wind Maria" by P.J. Proby is a song about a man who is lost and lonely in the world without his love. The song starts with the repetition of Maria's name several times, followed by the statement that "they call the wind Maria". This is because, in the place where the song is set, they have specific names for different natural elements like rain, wind, and fire. The song implies that Maria is the wind, which makes the mountains sound like people are dying and moves the stars and clouds in the sky.
The lyrics describe how the singer was once happy with his girl, and the sun was always shining. Still, he left her behind and is now lost and lonely without her. He feels that not even God can find him in the state he is in now. The singer then speaks of the specific names given to natural elements in the place where he is, which reveals the setting to be a western region of the United States. He is lost and alone and thinks back on the girl he once had and wishes Maria, the wind, would blow his love back to him.
