Running Up That Hill
PLACEBO! Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It doesn't hurt me
You wanna feel how it feels?
You wanna know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
You wanna hear about the deal I'm making?

You (if I only could be running up that hill)
You and me (if I only could be running up that hill)
And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could, ooh

You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware that I'm tearing you asunder
And there's a thunder in our hearts, baby

So much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?

You (if I only could be running up that hill)
You and me (if I only could be running up that hill)
You and me won't be unhappy (if I only could be running up that hill)

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could, ooh, ooh

Come on baby, come on, come on, darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Come on angel, come on, come on, darling
Let's exchange the experience, ooh

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems

And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
With no problems

If I only could
Be running up that hill
If I only could
Be running up that hill

If I only could
Be running up that hill
If I only could
Be running up that hill

If I only could
Be running up that hill
If I only could
Be running up that hill

If I only could
Be running up that hill

Overall Meaning

"Running Up That Hill" by PLACEBO is a powerful and melancholic ballad that reflects on the complexity of human relationships and the pain that comes with unrequited love. The song begins with the repetition of the lyrics "If I only could, I'd be running up that hill." This repetition suggests that the singer is trapped in a situation they cannot escape from, and that they desperately want to break free from it. They are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, even if it requires making a deal with God.

The singer acknowledges that their pain is not understood by those around them. They ask if others want to know how it feels, if they want to hear about the deal they are making. The singer then addresses someone they care about, likely a lover or close friend, emphasizing that "it's you and me." They wonder why there is so much hatred for the ones we love and question whether they both matter. The repetition of "It's you and me" reinforces the idea that they are in this together, and that they will support each other.

The second verse includes the lines, "You don't want to hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies. Unaware I'm tearing you asunder. Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts." This suggests that both parties in the relationship are hurting each other, perhaps unintentionally. The lyrics "tearing you asunder" imply that the singer is unwittingly causing pain to their loved one. Despite this, they still want to make a deal with God and exchange places so that they can be the one running up that hill.

Overall, "Running Up That Hill" is a poignant and emotional reflection on the complexities of love and relationships. The lyrics suggest a sense of isolation and desperation, but also a deep connection between two people who are struggling to make things work.

Personally I think this is one of the greatest covers of all time. I remember it coming out and it still gives me chills. Epic

@mfaithfull3098

It’s a great cover but Brian has not taken this lightly.

@fakiirification

the only cover better than this one, well, id say its a 3 way tie between Disturbed's cover of The Sound of Silence, and the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt he recorded shortly before his death. And this masterpiece.

@vadim4866

@fakiirification Elvis Presley - My Way cover is pure gold also (watch 1973 live version). Recorded shortly before death as well, it feels naturally that it's "his" song

@TheHeroRobertELee

I don't know. Marilyn Manson version of Tainted Love is pretty damn good too.

@GeraltofRivia22

@fakiirification I also really love the John Cale cover of Hallelujah.

Sure, the original is a great song with the bittersweetness of the 80s vibe. But this… This… It is a whole different story. It’s mesmerisingly dark and you can hear the combination of despair and irony in this magnificent voice that cuts like a blade. Superb.

@Fandrir

Agree. All the credit to Kate Bush for creating this amazing song, but Placebo took it and made it into a greater than life tune. They took a rough diamond and polished it.

@mariagabriellasenatore868

I think that's the best cover of this beautiful song of Kate Bush ❤❤

@MrDeano-eu9rg

I heard this one first and I personally think the other one is shite by comparison
