Desperado
POP DESIGN Lyrics

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You've been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet

Now, it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home

And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)

You better let somebody love you
Before it's too late

Overall Meaning

The song "Desperado" by the Eagles is a ballad that talks about the life of a cowboy who has been living a life of isolation and loneliness. The lyrics are addressed to the cowboy with the nickname "Desperado," who has been out riding fences for a long time. The song starts by asking the Desperado to come to his senses and realizes that he has been living a life that is hurting him more than he knows. The singer acknowledges that the Desperado is a hard one, and that he has his reasons for living the way he does.

In the song's subsequent verses, the singer tells Desperado of the risks of drawing the Queen of Diamonds, a reference to the fact that some of the things that please him can hurt him. The singer goes on to mention that although the Desperado has been offered many fine things, he only wants the things he can't have. Then the singer goes on to remind him that he is not getting any younger and that his pain and hunger will drive him home.

Moreover, the singer reminds the Desperado that freedom is only a concept, and that he is his own prisoner. He goes on to describe the Desperado's life, which is characterized by a lack of distinction between day and night, a sense of detachment that makes him lose his highs and lows, and the difficulty of finding somebody to love him. The song comes to an end with a suggestion to the Desperado that he comes down from his fences and allows someone to love him before it's too late.
