Drunken Sailor
Paddy and the Rats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
What we do with the drunken sailor
Earl-eye in the morning?

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning

Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Shave his belly with a rusty razor
Earl-eye in the morning

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning.(scream)

Put him in the back of paddy wagon
Put him in the back of paddy wagon
Put him in the back of paddy wagon
Earl-eye in the morning

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning.(scream)

Put him in the bed with the captain's daughter
Put him in the bed with the captain's daughter
Put him in the bed with the captain's daughter
Earl-eye in the morning

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning

(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)

Put him in a longboat 'till he's sober
Put him in a longboat 'till he's sober
Put him in a longboat 'till he's sober
Earl-eye in the morning

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning

That's what we do with the drunken sailor
What we do with the the drunken sailor
That's what we do with the drunken sailor
Earl-eye in the morning

Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Way hay, when up she rises
Earl-eye in the morning

(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)

(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
(Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)

Overall Meaning

"Drunken Sailor" is a traditional sea shanty that has been covered by many artists over the years. The lyrics suggest different ways to deal with a drunken sailor, asking "What shall we do with the drunken sailor?" The singer is looking for ways to fix the problem, but the suggestions are rather humorous and sometimes quite drastic.

The first suggestion is to wait for the sailor to sober up by putting him in a longboat until he’s sober. Another is to shave his belly with a rusty razor, and the third is to put him in the back of a paddy wagon. The fourth suggestion gets a little more risqué by suggesting that they put him in bed with the captain's daughter. Finally, the song suggests doing nothing and leaving him be as what's done with a drunken sailor.

The repetitive nature of the chorus, with the "way hay" and "earl-eye in the morning" refrains, makes this song perfect for group sing-alongs. The song itself has become somewhat of a drinking song and is often played in pubs and bars.

Hell yeah, this rocks! Irish melodies with some high voltage, what a wonderful combination.

179 people were put in the long boat, but they are still not sober.
