Hangman, hangman, hold it a little while,
Think I see my friends comin',
Ridin many a mile.

A-friends, did you get some silver?
Did you get a little gold?
What did you bring me, my dear friends,
Keep me from the Gallows Pole?
What did you bring me
Keep me from the Gallows Pole?

I couldn't get no silver, I couldn't get no gold,
You know that we're too damn poor
To keep you from the Gallows Pole.

Hangman, hangman, hold it a little while,
I think I see my brother comin',
Ridin many a mile.

Mm-brother, did you get me some silver?
Ah, dya get a little gold?
A-what did you bring me, my brother,
Keep me from the Gallows Pole?

Brother, I brought you some silver, yeah,
I brought a little gold,
I brought a little of ev'ry thing
To keep you from the Gallows Pole.
Yes, I brought you
To keep you from the Gallows Pole.

Hangman, hangman, turn your head awhile,
I think I see my sister coming,
Ridin' many a mile, mile, mile, mile.
Sister, I implore you, take him by the hand,
Take him to some shady bower,
Save me from the wrath of this man,
Please take him,
Save me from the wrath of this mad-man.

Hangman, hangman, upon your face a smile,
Pray tell me that I'm free to ride,
Ride for many a mile, mile, mile.

Oh, yes, you got a fine sister,
She warmed my blood from cold,
She warmed my blood to boiling hot
To keep you from the Gallows Pole,
Pole, pole, pole, yeah yeah.

'brother brought me silver,
And your sister warmed my soul,

But now I laugh and pull so hard
And see you swinging on my Gallows Pole, yeah. -

Overall Meaning

The song "Gallows Pole" by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant is based on an English traditional folk song, which tells the story of a man facing imminent execution by hanging. The lyrics describe the man's desperate pleas for help, as he begs his friends and family to bring him silver and gold to pay off the hangman and save him from the gallows pole. The first verse sets the scene, with the hangman holding off on carrying out the execution until the man's friends arrive, and the second verse sees the man disappointed when his friends haven't brought enough to save him. In the third verse, the man's brother arrives with enough money to save him, but then his sister arrives and offers herself in his place, hoping to spare her brother's life. However, in the final verse, it is revealed that the hangman has taken advantage of the sister's offer, and the man is left to face the gallows pole alone.

The song is a powerful commentary on the cruelty and injustice of the death penalty, as well as the desperation of those facing it. It also highlights the importance of community and support in times of crisis, as the man turns to his friends and family for help. The haunting melody and stripped-down instrumentation, featuring just acoustic guitars and vocals, add to the emotional impact of the lyrics.

This particular Zep song never seems old and outdated.
This band was and will always be one of the greatest bands in the history of rock n roll.
True masters at their art.

@XI_Daisy_XI

This is somewhat o fa cover, I think the original goes back to Leadbelly. Not being a jerk here, thought I'd share what I've learned. I respect and appreciate the original, but I like what Zep did with it better.
Such a primal groove.

@RK_peace

which zeppelin songs sound old and dated to you?

@TheSpiralAim

@@XI_Daisy_XI This is a VERY old folk tune that goes back a few hundred years.

@agnostic47

@@XI_Daisy_XI It's described as "traditional", meaning its origins are too old to know for sure. However it's thought to be English in origin dating from at least the 15th century.There are many versions and the prisoner usually gets freed after the hangman is bribed. LZ chose to have the guy hanged at the end, even though the hangman had had his silver, gold...... and sister. Hangmen aren't to be trusted!
