Genesis
Paladin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The silent scream of the conscience of man
As we are brought to sentience
Given dominion over the sea and land
To rule as we see fit

The perfect form, born from the perfect image
We are the chosen
Yet as we prosper and we create
We yearn to know

Thousands of years of progress
In search of a higher purpose
Unanswered questions to forces unknown
Our pleas are met with silence

And so we wander, blind to the way
Alone, abandoned and betrayed
Our stricken minds now led astray

Almighty One, bringer of the winds and rain
We seek reprieve from our existential pain
What is our purpose?
What have we been put here for?
What is your plan for us?
Tell us what our fate has in store

I am He who lifts the sun up to the sky
Bringer of night and day, creator of life
Even as your knowledge grows your minds will never know
What lies beyond this world before it's your time

Overall Meaning

The first verse in Paladin's song "Genesis" describes the human conscience and how it silently screams out as we come into existence, given authority over the earth and sea to rule as we please. We were created in the image of perfection and chosen, but as we build and flourish, we begin to ask questions about our purpose and yearn to understand the mysteries of the universe. However, after thousands of years of progress, our queries to unknown powers are met with complete silence, leaving us to wander in confusion and ignorance, abandoned and betrayed. The chorus uses a prayer-like tone as we call out to the Almighty, asking for revelation and relief from our existential pain and a clearer understanding of our fate.

Paladin's "Genesis" is a powerful and thought-provoking song that explores the eternal struggle of human beings in search of a higher meaning in life. It speaks of mankind's quest for knowledge and the inevitable limitations of human understanding, and the ultimate realization that there are some things beyond our grasp. Overall, "Genesis" is a powerful call to recognize and embrace our limitations while still striving to improve ourselves and the world around us.

The show was based on a book "A Man Called Smith" By Frank G. Robinson. He got his name and black clothes in an episode "Smoke".

I'm not a fan of this Colorization Process, especially as it ruins one of the best early TV Special Effects I've ever seen, a shot which looks almost flawless in Black-and-White (which is how I watched it just last night, when it played on Cable).

It's the shot at 19:44 where Paladin reaches out and shuts the eyes of Smoke --and Richard Boone is playing both parts. The Colorization makes it look like a chromakey effect (shot in front of a Greenscreen), when the way it was actually achieved was actually much trickier (as you can't chromakey Black-and-White footage):

First they shot Boone as Smoke, alone, who shuts his own eyes at a certain moment. Then, later, they rear-projected this footage on a screen and Boone as Paladin performed in front of it, on an entirely different "plane," just looking off-screen right --which makes it look like he's looking at Smoke. Then, as he reaches his hand forward, it's timed so that his fingers are in front of Smoke's eyes as he closes them, completing the illusion. Fantastic.

You don't have to be a fan of the colorization...you don't even have to LIKE it. But you don't have to ruin things for those who don't mind it like you do. Just keep your negativity to yourself!
