Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released three albums in the mid-1980s with lead vocalist Terry Glaze (Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle, and I Am the Night), with little success. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera recruited Anselmo in 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. They secured a record deal with major label Atco the following year. Their fifth album (which the band has since declared to be their official debut album), 1990's Cowboys from Hell, popularized the groove metal genre, while its 1992 follow-up Vulgar Display of Power achieved an even heavier sound and increased their popularity. The subsequent album Far Beyond Driven (1994) then debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 but lingering disputes led to the band breaking up in 2003. The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan while Anselmo continued to work on several side projects, including Down, which Brown joined as well.
On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Paul went on to form Hellyeah after his brother's death, and died of heart failure in 2018, leaving Brown and Anselmo as the only surviving members of the band's best-known lineup. In July 2022, it was announced that Brown and Anselmo were reuniting in 2023 for Pantera's first tour in 22 years, with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante filling in for the Abbott brothers on guitar and drums, respectively. The new lineup played its first show in 21 years at the Hell and Heaven festival in Mexico on December 2, 2022.

Pantera Lyrics

Southern are the sons, Lords unmatched
Your eyes don't look right
Should they be trusted now?
Trashed-mouth gods, avoided kings
Spirit of revolt, the ghost of youth
Every fucking year it stays the same
Out of pride I'll isolate my fears
Never turned our backs on why we're here
We'll grind that axe for a long time
Follow close, train of fools
Just like them, just like you
Their eyes don't seem right
Easily impressed plague
Dressed up fake, no respect
Every fucking year remains the same
Everybody sucks up to suit the day
Out of hate I'll isolate myself
Through the worst we still marched into hell
We'll grind that axe for a long time
We'll grind that axe for a long time, and I'll say it again
We'll grind that axe for a long time, and a-fuckin'-gain, I'll say
We'll grind that axe for a long time
Ah, the smell in the air is chicken shit
We'll grind that axe for a long time
We'll grind that axe for a long time
We'll grind that axe, we'll grind that axe
We'll grind that axe for a long time
Every fucking song remains the same
To everyone who sucks-up for the fame
Out of strength you know we speak the truth
Every trend that dies is living proof
We'll grind that axe for a long time
The lyrics of the Pantera song We'll Grind That Axe for a Long Time portray a sense of rebellion against conformity and the superficiality of society. The first verse mentions someone who seems to be powerful, wearing ten crowns and having dragons' heads, but also portrays them as untrustworthy. The second verse describes a group of people, including the singer, who refuse to conform to societal pressures and isolate themselves out of pride and hate. The chorus reinforces their determination to stay true to themselves and their values, grinding their metaphorical axe for a long time, even in the face of stagnation and trend-chasing.
The use of vivid imagery in the lyrics, such as the ten crowns and dragons' heads, adds to the rebellious tone of the song, as does the harsh language and references to "trash-mouth gods" and "chicken shit". The repetition of "every fucking year it stays the same" and "we'll grind that axe for a long time" reinforces the idea that this is an ongoing struggle, but also highlights the determination and tenacity of the singer and their group.
Overall, the lyrics of We'll Grind That Axe for a Long Time are a rallying cry against conformity and the superficiality of society, encouraging listeners to stay true to their values and not be swayed by trends or societal pressures.

We'll Meet Again
I walk the
Streets of darkness
Where hell awaits
Guarded by the mystery
Just beyond the gates
Searching for the answer
Every man must find
Before eternity beckons
I will make you mine
Goodbye, mystery
Goodbye, pain
Goodbye, love
We'll meet again
In another lifetime
She'll take another man
She's left me here to die
Its killing me again!
Goodbye, mystery
Goodbye, pain
Goodbye, love
We'll meet again
Nós Nos Veremos de Novo
Eu ando nas
Ruas de escuridão
Onde o inferno aguarda
Guardadas pelo mistério
Bem além dos portões
Procurando pela resposta
Que cada homem tem de achar
Antes da eternidade se aproximar
Eu vou fazer você ser minha
Adeus, mistério
Adeus, dor
Adeus, amor
Nós nos veremos novamente
Em outra vida
Ela vai ficar com outro homem
Ela me deixou aqui para morrer
Isto está matando me de novo
Adeus, mistério
Adeus, dor
Adeus, amor
Nós nos veremos novamente

This song was a totally a precursor to Cemetery Gates...tempo, similar solo structure, soaring Phil vocals...truly a hidden gem
