Papa Wemba Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ba téya nga ba koko basanga mwana soki azali ko nguluma
A simbi yo na elamba é ko bengana ye té ô
Longwa na yo libala ngo soni ô zalaka pembeni é

A deux kilomètres moko à deux centimètres ôkaramé

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Papa Wemba's song Amazone speak of a woman who is fiercely independent and doesn't need a man. The opening line, "Yo mwana moko na soni yo vandaka na libala," translates to "You, my sister, who walks with confidence." She is sure of herself and doesn't let anyone's opinions bring her down. The next line, "Yo bindinké na malémbé ô yaya mukaramé ô," which roughly means "You walk slowly but with purpose," further emphasizes her confidence.

As the song progresses, the singer speaks of a "matata ô" or a problem that he's experiencing with a woman from his village. The woman in question has rejected him and found love elsewhere. The lyrics suggest that he's jealous of her independence and the fact that she didn't need him in her life. He lamentingly says that the other men in the village laughed at him and told him to move on.

The chorus of the song, "A deux kilomètres moko à deux centimètres ôkaramé," which means "Two kilometers or two centimeters away," seems to allude to the fact that this woman is too far away from him, either physically or emotionally. Overall, the song celebrates the independence and strength of the woman in question.
