Embers Fire
Paradise Lost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A fallen time that's bygone
A crude elite that's from a distant zone
You turn a blind eye on what's brave
You don't know if it's the truth you told

Anger looks on the quiet dreaming
Seals the sense incandescent ones
Hold back desire for danger
A bet you lose, you'll have no way to turn
I see the man who lives and breathes corruption
Into a circle that you call you own yeah

Don't run away, from the pain
A claim that you deal with
A power game, from within
Impossible for you to see this
Oh yeah
No

Laid down the laws of deceit
The ones who cherish are the ones who'll go
Into the ashes of a tortured world
Only in mind's eye can you see a light

Harmony break, dark awakes
In old eyes The trouble, feel it
Here to stay
Mark the way, improvise the judgment hearing
No

Don't run away, from the pain
A claim that you deal with
A power game, from within
Impossible for you to see this

Anger looks on the quiet dreaming
Seals the scenes incandescent ones

All remains of the glowing embers
Is a bleak cold irrelevance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Paradise Lost's song "Embers Fire" paint a picture of a dystopian world where corruption and deceit reign, and where those in power have turned a blind eye to the injustices that plague their society. The opening lines speak of a bygone era, a time when a crude elite ruled from a distant land. The singer suggests that this elite keeps the truth from their people and that they are afraid to confront the realities of their society. The anger of the oppressed is characterized as a "quiet dreaming," representing the powerlessness that they feel within this system.

As the song progresses, the singer urges the listener not to run away from the pain of their situation, but instead to face it head-on. They suggest that there is a power game at play, one that is impossible for those within the system to see clearly. The theme of corruption persists, with the singer calling out the "man who lives and breathes corruption" and the "laws of deceit" that have been put in place. Despite this, however, there remains a glimmer of hope. The singer encourages us to look to the embers of the past, the small flames of resistance that still flicker despite the darkness that surrounds them.

Overall, "Embers Fire" is a dark and powerful commentary on the human condition. It speaks to the hopelessness that so many feel, even as it suggests that there may still be a way forward.

This song and music video is so underrated, its one of the best of the 90s.

@TERGENIS

How do you mean, they won the catagory 'Best video'with MTV's Headbangers Ball back in 1993.

Gahh, that comment has been up for a year. And when I go to mention the best video award, I am beaten by 4 days. I started regularly watching Headbangers Ball just at the time of that award. (I miss Headbangers Ball. I actually made a new friend at the pub during a maths summer school a few years ago, as we bonded over a mutual love for Vanessa Warwick. :P)
Never a super fan of PL, but I had Icon and Draconian Times, and regard them among the best metal albums ever, which I still listen to in 2020 (that's part lie actually; I've only listened to the latter so far this year, but I will get around to Icon, I'm sure).

@TERGENIS

@@neildhan who didn't had an eye on Vanessa Warwick as young teenager. :P Still the best and hottest Metalchick around for that period.
