So Much Is Lost
Paradise Lost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What this seems to be, is real
All of my life is changing
You're the enemy, I fear
All of my life is changing
Always some rearranging

So much is lost, so much disharmony
So much is lost, no voice of sympathy

My identity is not real
All of my life is changing
All of my lies you're facing

So much is lost, so much disharmony
So much is lost, no voice of sympathy

What this seems to be, is real
All of my life seems wasted

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of So Much Is Lost by Paradise Lost speak about the feeling of going through a significant change and realizing that much of what was once important or true in one's life is now lost. The repetition of "all of my life is changing" indicates a sense of uncertainty and loss that the singer is experiencing. The line "you're the enemy, I fear" suggests that the change is perhaps caused by someone or something that the singer perceives as a threat, highlighting the vulnerability and fear that comes with drastic change.

The song speaks to the loneliness and sense of loss that comes with changing one's identity. The line "my identity is not real" suggests a deep feeling of detachment from oneself, perhaps because the old identity no longer fits the changing circumstances. The repetition of "so much is lost, no voice of sympathy" further emphasizes the feeling of isolation and helplessness that the singer is experiencing.

As a whole, the song can be seen as a meditation on the difficulty of adapting to change and the pain of losing what was once familiar. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but they convey a potent sense of melancholy and introspection, with imagery of loss and discordance.

This is a very interesting era for the band, it's basically PL stripped of all anger and aggression, letting the melancholic side of things take the stage. Nick's lyrics and Greg's lead melodies remain as distinctive as ever, even if the presentation and context has shifted a bit. Experimental though it may be, it's a true PL record through and through. I don't think the band lost their identity on this album at all.
