Home Is For The Heartless
Parkway Drive Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If home is where the heart is
Why do I feel so fucking heartless?

The crumbling skyline
Cuts a vicious horizon
Sinking its teeth into the cold September sky

Decaying towers of steel
Reach with crooked spires for the heavens
Like bones of the hollow chest of this town
Torn wide for the scavengers

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Mother Mercy, take my hand
Home, home (Woah, woah)
Follow me through this forsaken land

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Father time, return what's mine
The innocence you stole from these eyes
'Cause I just feel, I just feel numb

For the vision burning before me
Is one of former glory
An icon cast in the light of freer times
Now writhes in a bed of lies

Hope doesn't live
Hope doesn't live here
Hope doesn't live
Love doesn't live here anymore
Anymore, anymore

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Mother mercy, take my hand
Home, home (Woah, woah)
Follow me through this forsaken land

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Father time, return what's mine
The innocence you stole from these eyes
'Cause I just feel, I just feel numb

I just feel numb
I just feel numb
I just feel numb
I just feel numb

Woah, woah
Woah, woah

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Mother mercy, take my hand
Home, home (Woah, woah)
Follow me through this forsaken land

Home, home (Woah, woah)
Father time, return what's mine
The innocence you stole from these eyes
'Cause I just feel, I just feel numb

'Cause I just feel, I just feel numb
'Cause I just feel, I just feel

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Parkway Drive's song Home Is For The Heartless paint a picture of a decaying city, where the singer cannot find a sense of home and feels numb to the world around them. The opening lines, "If home is where the heart is, why do I feel so fucking heartless?" set the tone of the song, questioning the very concept of home and the emotions it is supposed to evoke. The crumbling skyline and decaying towers of steel symbolize the city's decline, with the "scavengers" waiting to prey upon the remains.

The chorus repeats the refrain "Home, home" as a desperate plea, but it's unclear what the singer is seeking. Mother Mercy and Father Time are both invoked, with the former asked to take their hand and the latter asked to return what's been stolen from their "eyes". It's possible that the singer is seeking either comfort or a sense of a past that no longer exists. The final lines of the song repeat "I just feel numb" over and over, emphasizing the numbness and disconnectedness the singer feels.

Overall, the song Home Is For The Heartless explores themes of loss, decay, and lack of belonging, using vivid imagery to create a picture of a city in decline and a narrator struggling to find a sense of home.

Line by Line Meaning

If home is where the heart is
When one thinks of 'home', it is meant to be a place of comfort and love, where the heart finds solace.

Why do I feel so fucking heartless?
However, despite the traditional notion of home being where the heart is, the singer cannot shake off the feeling of emptiness, loneliness and desolation, which is causing them to feel like they have lost their heart.

The crumbling skyline
The singer observes how the once beautiful city skyline has become a reflection of the state of the town- bleak, broken and decrepit.

Cuts a vicious horizon
The skyline does not offer a beautiful picture, but rather exposes the harsh reality of life in the town.

Sinking its teeth into the cold September sky
This line is a metaphor that paints a picture of how the city skyline is so broken and ugly that it seems to be biting and clawing at the sky.

Decaying towers of steel
The singer draws attention to the tall metallic buildings in town, which are not only old and falling apart but also devoid of any life or love.

Reach with crooked spires for the heavens
The buildings, even with their decay, still seek to scrape up at the sky, a desperate plea for redemption and survival amidst the despair of the town

Like bones of the hollow chest of this town
The skyscrapers are likened to the bone structure of the town, manifesting and exposing the existing emptiness and desolation prevalent in society.

Torn wide for the scavengers
The society and its people have been overpowered and exploited and now, they are nothing more than rudimentary nutrients for corrupt scavengers.

Mother Mercy, take my hand
In an attempt to find salvation and redemption from the emptiness and hopelessness that they feel, the artist calls on Mother Mercy, an imaginary figure of salvation.

Father time, return what's mine
The singer addresses Father Time, seeking to resolve the wrongs of the past that have left him feeling lost and hopeless, and hoping that time may heal these wounds.

The innocence you stole from these eyes
The artist is addressing Father Time and referring to the naivety and hopefulness of youth, which is now lost and has been replaced by a sense of bleakness and despair.

'Cause I just feel, I just feel numb
After observing the state of the world and the town, and being unable to find any way to restore hope and peace, the singer has become numb to the world and cannot feel any emotion anymore.

For the vision burning before me
The singer sees a hallucination of what the town used to look like before the decay, despair and hopelessness took over the town.

Is one of former glory
The singer is reminiscing over the memories of the town when it was flourishing, full of life and love.

An icon cast in the light of freer times
The memories that the artist is celebrating are of a time when the world was a much freer place, where love and hope flourished in society without any restrictions.

Now writhes in a bed of lies
However, these memories are an illusion and a part of the artist's past that can never be recovered or restored. They have been replaced with a world entrenched in despair and dishonesty.

Hope doesn't live here
The singer acknowledges that there isn't any hope for the current situation and there is no way things can improve or restore themselves to how they once were.

Love doesn't live here anymore
The town no longer stands for love and warmth, and the companionship that was once the hallmark of a thriving society is now lost forever.

I listened to this song because of a concert you dedicated this song to Tom from Architects. I cried my eyes out. I love the Archtitects, and for you to break down in a performance shows the most raw, emotional feeling of a song and singer. It's beautiful and truly respect your group. I love Parkway and have seen you in Utah. Who would have though metal could pull the string's of a woman's heart! Thank you for that dedication. It was moving. Can't wait for the future of Parkway Drive!

@metalllicLife

Beautiful comment! From another female, metal has called me and pulled at my own heartstrings over and again! It reaches where other beloved genres can't.
