Coat Of Many Colors
Parton Dolly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Back through the years
I go wonderin' once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of

As she sewed, she told a story
From the Bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss

My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
And holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

And oh, I couldn't understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told 'em of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told 'em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn't understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors

My momma made for me
Made just for me

Overall Meaning

Dolly Parton's "Coat of Many Colors" tells the inspiring story of a young girl's humble beginnings and her mother's unwavering love. The song is a poignant reminder of how the simple things in life can make all the difference.

The lyricist takes us back in time to the seasons of her youth, and recalls a box of rags that her family received as a gift. In the song, the mother sews the rags together to create a coat of many colors for her daughter, and sings her a story from the Bible about Joseph's coat of many colors.

The garment makes the girl feel rich and proud, even though it's made only from rags. She wants to share her happiness with her classmates, but they mock her because of her patched and colorful coat. Nevertheless, the girl stands tall and tells them that the one who chooses to be poor is poor indeed.

"Coat of Many Colors" celebrates the idea that love and family can nourish a child's soul and give them the confidence they need to face the world. It also underscores the importance of being proud of who we are, no matter our circumstances.

But they didn't understand it And I tried to make them see That one is only poor Only if they choose to be Now I know we had no money But I was rich as I could be In my coat of many colors My momma made for me Made just for me
However, their lack of understanding and empathy didn't sway me. I tried to make them see that you're never poor unless you choose to be. In spite of our poverty, I still felt blessed because of the love and care that went into making the coat. It was created solely for me and it made me feel truly rich.

This song always reminds me of my mama, RIP. I’m 62 now but grew up poor working class (cotton mills) and Mama made all my clothes until I went off to college and even then she still made clothes for my sister and me. She was a talented seamstress but I vividly remember being embarrassed as a young teen that I had to wear homemade clothes while others wore clothes bought from department stores. I’m so grateful that I realized as a young adult all the sacrifices she made for my sister and me and was able to express my gratitude to her. RIP Billie Hunter…you were the best mama ever
