Ain't That A Shame
Pat Boone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You made me cry
When you said goodbye

Ain't that a shame?
My tears fell like rain
Ain't that a shame?
You're the one to blame
You broke my heart
When you said we'll part

Ain't that a shame?
My tears fell like rain
Ain't that a shame?
You're the one to blame

Farewell, goodbye
Although I'll cry

Ain't that a shame?
My tears fell like rain
Ain't that a shame?
You're the one to blame

You made me cry
When you said goodbye

Ain't that a shame?
My tears fell like rain
Ain't that a shame?
You're the one to blame

Farewell, goodbye
Although I'll cry

Ain't that a shame?
My tears fell like rain

Ain't that a shame?
You're the one to blame

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pat Boone's song Ain't That a Shame tell the story of heartbreak and sadness. The singer is addressing the person who broke their heart and made them cry. The chorus repeats the titular phrase "ain't that a shame?" which serves as a sort of lament for the pain caused by the breakup.

The first verse describes how the person's words led to tears falling like rain. The second verse is more direct and states that the person in question broke the singer's heart by saying they would part ways. The third verse says farewell, acknowledging that the relationship is over, but also notes that the singer will still cry. In each verse, the chorus is used to emphasize the pain and assign blame to the one who caused it.

Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of hurt and betrayal, and the repeated use of the phrase "ain't that a shame?" reinforces the idea that the singer is mourning the loss of the relationship.

On this day in 1957 {October 10th} Pat Boone performed "Ain't That A Shame" on his own ABC-TV program... Two years earlier on July 9th, 1955 it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; and on September 17th, 1955 it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Most Played In Jukeboxes chart... And on June 11th, 1955 the original version by Fats Domino reached #1 {for 10 weeks} on Billboard's R&B Best Sellers chart... Mr. Boone turns 80 next year on June 1st & Mr. Domino will be 86 come February 26th...

this is a re-recorded version of the song. Pat redid this later on, but his chart topper was done in the 50s

God bless you, brother Pat! Thanx, John, for postin' it. Have a blessed week!

Fats has a huge diamond ring shaped like a piano and when he shows it to people he tells them "Pat Boone paid for this".

still think Fats Domino sang it better, but you do have a point about his verson being more popular.

Frederick Bouldin

good version of this song

Elvis was supposed to be the sexy bad boy.  Ironically Pat was such a womanizer, he caused his wife Shirley to have a nervous breakdown... he couldn't get away with that today... but in the past, the media was controlled by the studios

Genovia Vinson

Fats Domino version is waaaaayyyy better

Jerry Metcalf

It is better, but let's give Pat some credit here; surprisingly good!
