When Pat Mears was unknown and living in Austin, purely by chance I heard her at Liberty Lunch, was instantly electrified and had to get to know her. In those days her guitar was often in the pawn shop and she borrowed mine several times for gigs. She broke strings so often that she took to giving me a new set of strings after every gig. To this day my guitar has deep pick gouges because that's the way she played back then, a hard-driving flatpick style. Europe appreciates her better than America ever did.
