Metheny's musical contexts separate into many branches: the Pat Metheny Group plus various collaborations, duets, solo works, and other side projects.

He first made it big in the jazz world with the famous vibraphonist Gary Burton. Throughout the late 70's, 80's, and 90's, Metheny established himself as one of the leading jazz guitar players in the world. Famous for his tasteful midwestern style and tone, he also has an incredible facility with the guitar. His compositions have earned him acclaim in the jazz world as well.

He has played with such greats as: Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Bill Stewart, Brad Mehldau and Jaco Pastorius. Similar artists include Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, and John McLaughlin.

Pat Metheny has won 17 Grammy awards and holds the record for winning Grammys in the most categories.

I got this album when it first came out in LP and to be frank I did not like it in the sense of American Garage or Still Life talking it was quite different. I also have it on CD and was listening to it and for some reason I looked at the title and thought "what a perfect title". You can project so many scenes on this: a mother and estranged child; a lost lover; a colleague that will never make their potential and as all the notes below they can make the music speak to them and their circumstance. I suspect that this is both satisfying to the artist and speaks volumes to the work. Nicely done Mr. Metheny and thank you for the post.

I keep coming back to this, thank you to the folks who have replied and commented. The title absolutely hooks me. "Tell her you saw me." This is a deception, you have spoken or corresponded so why only "Tell her you saw me?" Is this kinder to her or to the teller or to the person giving the instruction? Does she worry? Is that why she can be told this partial truth and that will put the matter to rest? No mention of time or place, not to mention that we obviously spoke. Who is being assuaged and who is being deceived? It is an amazing title and the music is just so very great. Thanks to all I hope you enjoy it, I certainly do.

Most interesting observation of the title and its subsequent notions of mother and estranged child, lost lover etc. Been there and done all that. Most heart wrenching is estrangement from child. But in listening to this music for some reason it provides some sort of soothing of the broken soul. Thanks for your intelligent comments.

I took my children to to see the Secret story concert they were very young I can remember being surrounded by them just listening and watching their reaction to the music and lights we had front row seats we were on a family date we had a blast they eventually went to sleep and I enjoyed pat a great deal

I think I heard this song at Ravinia last week near the end of the night. Pat started it on guitar and the strings came in much later. Whatever it was, tears streamed down my face. I was embarrassed but I couldn't stop crying because it was so beautiful and sad.

There are soooo many compositions that Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays have written/performed that I loved from the first time I heard them ... this is one of them. When I first heard this piece and read the title, I felt the emotion of that moment when you see an old acquaintance that still knows your ex-girlfriend (for which there are still some emotional remembrances), and you ask them to "tell her you saw me". Gorgeous changes and melody.

Pat Methany is a progressive artist in saying that he doe not look back..he looks forward..the past is the past and looks for the next step in his carrer..i first saw him on the Secret Story tour and his band was amazing.I have always liked him from the very beginning of his carrer.And have since seen many of his performances.Never walked away diappoimted only to think how wonderful body of music he comes up with..incrediable.
