Fresh from a successful string of regional headline tour dates, they have also toured the UK with Keston Cobblers’ Club and recorded a live video session for ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris so far this year. They made their festival debut in 2012 at Festibelly, on the same line-up as acts including Bastille and We Were Evergreen and, having spent the latter part of 2013 touring the festival circuit (including Green Man, LeeFest, Standon Calling and London FolkFest ) they return this summer to make their debut at Cambridge Folk Festival in addition to Lyme Folk Weekend, Hop Farm, Larmer Tree, Wilderness and Green Man festivals.
They released their debut record The Boatswain’s Refuge EP in May 2013. Produced by BBC Folk Award nominee Ben Walker and recorded at the historic Crypt Studios in north London, the EP was released via Folkroom Records and radio highlights include BBC Radio 2 amongst others. They were also asked to record a song for For Folk’s Sake’s annual Christmas compilation in 2013 and their version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen was championed by both BBC Radio 6 and Amazing Radio.
"One of, if not the single most promising folk act to emerge so far this decade."

Patch and the Giant Lyrics

Copy shop clerk
But she won't look up at me
Don't want to be known as the freak
Who just comes around to catch her eye
We could be sleeping in the flowers
We could sleep all afternoon
I'd proclaim that I'm one too
Then we float into the harbor
With just piers and boats around
I declare that I am England
You declare that I have drowned
I got a ride
Home with a drunk guy
How ungrateful I must have seemed
He showed me how
To spin my head round and round
We could be sleeping in the flowers
We could sleep all afternoon
You'd proclaim that you're an island
I'd proclaim that I'm one too
Then we float into the harbor
With just piers and boats around
I declare that I am England
You declare that I have drowned
We could be sleeping in the flowers
We could sleep all afternoon
You'd proclaim that you're an island
I'd proclaim that I'm one too
Then we float into the harbor
With just piers and boats around
I declare that I am England
You declare that I have drowned
We'll be sleeping in the flowers
Tell my boss that I've been fired
We'll be sleeping in the flowers
Tell my boss that I've been fired
We'll be sleeping in the flowers
Tell my boss I'm fired
We'll be sleeping in the flowers
Tell my boss I'm fired
The song, "Flowers" by Patch and the Giant, tells the story of two individuals who are in love but are afraid to express their feelings. The first verse describes a person who has a crush on a copy shop clerk but is hesitant to approach her. He doesn't want to be seen as a freak who just comes around to catch her eye. The second person he speaks of is someone who is not very grateful and has a destructive influence on the first person, who is already struggling with communication.
The chorus indicates the desire to escape into a dreamlike state where the two people can be together without fear or inhibition. They could sleep all afternoon in the flowers, proclaiming they are each an island, but coming together, they could float away with only piers and boats around. The bridge reiterates the idea of drowning while declaring that he is England, suggesting that his love for her has merged his identity with the country’s. Nevertheless, she declares that he has drowned, implying his love for her has led to his downfall.
The idea of sleeping in the flowers symbolizes a paradise-like state, where each individual can be themselves and connect with each other free of fear or judgement. The chorus repeats itself three times, representing the desire to escape reality and find solace in the love they share. The song portrays a beautiful but tragic picture of a love story that has an ambiguous ending. It depicts the struggles of falling deeply in love with someone and the fear of expressing it, leading to a feeling of being lost in the world.
